Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay Livermore Valley 2017

Member Review by vin0vin0:

Decent Livermore chardonnay, some honey, lemon brulee, a bit of oak and a smooth texture. Not very complex or minerally, subdued acidity and not much of a finish but a fairly good wine for the price.

Christmas 2013, Binny's. Super Bowl party. 1/2 bottle leftover in the refrigerator. Sampling the remainder tonight, 2/3/2014, it will have to be better than the football game. Horrible contest.

Creamy start, followed by spices and a short tart finish. Yummy!

Definite cream and butteriness here on the nose and a bit of toast brings on a very soft mouthfeel that is smooth on the finish...easy drinking and big enough to stand up to some food!

I am not a white wine lover. That being said, I really loved this wine. Creamy, buttery, and a heavenly nose of crisp apple made me want to drink down the whole bottle.

Vineyard: Since 1883, five generations of our family have handcrafted fine wines that express the very best of our vineyards and winemaking expertise. Our Estate Grown Morning Fog Chardonnay is named for the morning coastal fog pushed by Pacific wind streams into the bowl of the San Francisco Bay and lured inland by Livermore Valley’s unique East- West orientation. This daily phenomenon moderates the climate to produce excellent, beautifully balanced Chardonnay. Planted on various Wente clones, each vineyard block is farmed and harvested separately which maximizes quality and adds an elegant complexity to the wine. Recognized as “California’s First Family of Chardonnay”, our family was the first in California to produce a varietally labeled Chardonnay in 1936 made from our heritage Wente clones. Today, nearly 80% of the Chardonnay vineyards in California are planted with the Wente clone, which originated from our family’s estate. Winemaking: FERMENTATION: This wine was fermented in 50% neutral American oak barrels and 50% in stainless steel tanks. The oak provides hints of vanilla and enhances the mouthfeel and the steel preserves the naturally vibrant fruit flavors inherent in this Chardonnay. AGING: The barrel fermented portion was aged sur lie for 5 months and batonnage, the art of stirring the barrels, was performed monthly. This adds a creamy note to the wine and greatly enhances the texture. From the remaining 50% stainless steel portion, half was aged on lees for 5 months while the other half was racked clean to preserve the fresh fruit character. Tasting Notes: Our 2017 Morning Fog Chardonnay is a beautiful expression of the Livermore Valley with aromatics from creamy lemon curd, graham and a touch of floral and vanilla. This wine is medium-bodied with a nice acidity. Varietal Composition: 98% Chardonnay, 2% Gewürztraminer ALCOHOL: 13.5% pH: 3.67 TA: 0.55g/100ml

I had this wine at Russell’s Steak Chops & More and it paired up very nicely with their Shallow Poached Atlantic Salmon. This wonderful Chardonnay was aged in both French oak and stainless steel barrels showing a different complexity that grew on me throughout the night. Bright and crisp acidity at first almost reminded me of a Sauvignon Blanc but towards the back of the palate it left a smooth and soft finish. The nose reminded me of standing on the boardwalk at the Seaport District in New York; vibrant sea salt and orchid. I loved every moment of that night and savored every last drop of the wine.

Wente is well known for its Wente clone, a popular sight in many a California Chardonnay vineyard. This flavorful example is compellingly rich and textured, yet modest in alcohol, with a happy apple, melon taste and a bit of an exotic lift on the finish, possibly from the 2% Gewuuml;rztraminer thatrsquo;s blended in.
