Travaglini Gattinara 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very reticent at first with a sweet and astringent fruit note over oystershell with a touch of cigar ash. The roasted cherry fruit does come to life but remains a bit low key on the nose. In the mouth this starts out a bit clumsily with good chewy fruit and nicely nuanced black pepper and smoke notes framing the fruit. It gains sweetness to the fruit but not tremendous length. A solid yet uninspired showing. 2009-2011 86pts

Travaglini:
The Travaglini winegrowing company, based in the heart of the hills of the Gattinara region, has 55 ha used for wine production. There are 39 ha currently planted with vines and the rest is pending plantation. Both the “GATTINARA DOCG”, a highly structured wine for ageing, and a small part of the young wine known as “CINZIA”, are produced from the Nebbiolo grape variety (known locally as "Spanna".

4 Stars. lighter than the 2009, obviously a reflection of the weather. Appreciated by the guests; none the less. I explained the front and back challenges and they better understood Nebbiolo varietal from Piedmont. Cheers.

Exactly what I (we Barolo Rist.) needed this weekend. The Gattinara was subtle and full light with feistiness that was enjoyed. -I am really happy to serve this 100% Nebbiolo not sure what to expect. - Wine notes. Blueberry, White pepper and vanilla. Full mouth feel for a light body wine. Alive...

This Gattinara from Travaglini comes from the excellent 2004 vintage and does not disappoint. Now turning brick red and smelling of Maraschino Cherries and woody mountain herbs, this wine enters the mouth with suave viscosity and balance. Time for further aging is evident with the medium tannins, but drinking well now.

Wine Description: A deep pomegranate red wine; medium-bodied wine shows good depth in its red fruit. Tre Vigne 2001 - 91 Points, Wine Enthusiast/ Harmonious and smooth, this ruby-colored Nebbiolo from the 2001 vintage shows an excellent evolution of aromas. Fresh fruit notes have turned into dried berry and the smoke and wood elements are well integrated. The wine ends with polished tannins and bright acidity.

Top 30 Italian Wines Under $30/ In the tiny region of Gattinara, north of Milan and Turin, close to Lake Maggiore, the Nebbiolo grape yields very different wines from those in Barolo. Lighter but still intensely perfumed and intellectually challenging, they have long been a favorite of savvy connoisseurs. This version might be the entry-level wine from the Travaglini family, but even at 5 years old it still tastes young and fresh and will go on improving for several more years yet.
