Sterling Vineyards Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Svr Reserve 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smoky on the nose and slightly sweet with a gentle vegetal underlay, nice tobacco nuances, some sweet toasty oak and nicely pure and fresh black currant fruit. A bit compact in the mouth with nice tension between acid and well managed tannins. This is a bit tight at this point though it has a nice fresh edge to the black fruit that matches the aromatics. The tannins are a bit dominate today but they are polished and well managed, adding a touch of spice on the palate that leads to some vanilla tones on the back end and a moderately long, clear, fairly precise finish. This actually shows some restraint today and comes across with some understated elegance. This should improve with 2-4 years in the cellar. 92pts

The wine is a deep ruby hue, with rich aromas of black licorice, black cherry, toasty oak, new leather and briar. On the palate, this soft, approachable wine shows ripe Bing cherry notes accented with hints of toasty oak and vanilla. Silky, supple tannins leave a lingering finish. In the tradition of fine Bordeaux blends, this is an approachable, food-friendly wine.
