Sterling Vineyards 'Napa' Merlot 2015

Member Review by SonzTwin1:

Wonderful elegant full-bodied wine even at the regular price - everything speaks of quality. At least a half star added for the deal they have on Costco right now after a $6 instant discount (off the Costco price, mind you) - $8.99! At Sterling's site, this is $28. At this price, it is cheaper than Costco's own case-discounted 2016 Vintner's Collection, and that one is not NEARLY as good as the Napa appelations. But you'd better hurry! (Just to manage your expectations/disappointment, I got mine at the Altamonte Springs, FL store - it may not be available where you are, or at that same price)

Sterling Napa Merlot is one of the very best in the $22 price range. Love it! Drinks more like a well structured Cabernet! A great wine!

VINTAGE: 2014 was a wonderful vintage for the Napa Valley along the lines of the recent outstanding vintages of 2012 and 2013. Although California’s drought brought another dry winter, the growing season started with a warm, dry spring and relatively early bud break. Summer temperatures remained mild and consistent with even, warm temperatures throughout. The overall outstanding quality and fruit characteristics in this vintage will make Bordeaux varietals, such as Merlot, the highlight of the season. Grapes for the 2014 Napa Valley Merlot were harvested between September 6th and October 9th. VINEYARDS: Sterling vineyards have been making Napa Valley Merlot for well over 50 years. This history and winemaking legacy in the valley gives the winery access to some of the finest vineyards in the region. For the 2014 Napa Valley Merlot the grapes come primarily from the Calistoga and Oak Knoll districts. The warm Calistoga region is known for imparting big, ripe tannins with dense fruit character. The Oak Knoll district—known as Napa Valley’s “sweet spot”—is a little cooler than Calistoga, and the Merlot fruit from here lends more red fruit characteristics and bright acidity, softening the overall blend. The combination of the two regions creates an elegant Merlot that reflects the beautiful nature of this varietal in the Napa Valley. WINEMAKING: Kept in separate small lots until the final blending process, the grapes for the Napa Valley Merlot were picked, quickly brought to the winery and placed in tanks for a two-day cold soak designed to extract color and flavor from the grapes. The juice was then fermented dry and the young wine was placed in American (56%), French (30%) and European (14%) oak barrels for 18 months. WINEMAKER TASTING NOTES: The Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Merlot is a vivid ruby-red color in the glass with aromas of blackberry fruit, plum and ripe black cherry. The appealing bouquet leads to a mouthcoating, rich palate where additional red and black fruit flavors mingle with notes of graphite and dried spice. The viscous mouthfeel of the wine is plush and the ripe tannins are refined and polished. The Napa Valley Merlot is well-balanced and elegant, offering true varietal characteristics and a sleek, flavorful finish. VINIFICATION: 18 MONTHS AMERICAN OAK, FRENCH OAK AND EUROPEAN OAK Alc: 14.5% TA: 5.6 g/L pH: 3.64

Tasting Notes: “Our Napa Valley Merlot really delivered in 2012,” says Winemaker Alison Crary- Rodriguez. “The return of warm weather and the long growing season allowed the fruit to develop complex aromas and flavors.” Dark brambly berries, ripe black cherry, violets and cinnamon pair up with vanilla, mocha and sweet oak. The intensity on the palate holds its weight and fullness through the long, smooth finish. “This is a Merlot that drinks like a Cab,” observes Alison. “The rich body and round, structured tannins will pair well with roasted meats.” Vineyard: For over fifty years, Sterling has been making Merlot in Napa Valley. This long history gives us access to some incredible vineyards that run the length of the valley from Oak Knoll in the south to Calistoga in the north. For this wine, we used a majority of estate vineyards, selected from various valley floor and hillside bench locations. The big structure and tannin profile comes from our Diamond Mountain and Oak Knoll sites. Calistoga makes up the remaining third, softening the blend and adding broad, dark fruit flavors and fleshy mouthfeel. Winemaking: This vintage, the vines did most the winemaking. Perfect conditions throughout the season allowed the fruit to develop slowly for complex flavors and structure. For the first time in many years, there was no pressure to pick and we were able to watch the grapes develop on the vine, harvesting each block as the fruit reached perfect ripeness. At the winery, we simply harnessed those flavors and translated them to the bottle. A two-day cold soak, followed by fermentation with frequent punch-downs, captured the complex aromas and flavors. We aged the wine for 10 months in oak to knit together the flavors and leave a kiss of spices. Vintage: Warm and dry, 2012 had ideal weather conditions that allowed the grapes to develop slowly over a long season. With no heat spikes and no rain, we were able to pick the fruit as each cluster reached perfect maturity. “There is a lovely freshness to the dark fruit that indicates the grapes were picked at the exact point of ripeness,” observes Alison. The Sterling Napa Merlot celebrates this varietal with a vibrant, juicy core of red fruit; generous, youthful texture and a balanced spice profile. Following the deep purple hue, aromas of fresh cranberry and black cherry take the stage, complemented by cedar, spicy-floral and dried-herb notes. A great burst of flavor opens the palate, as deep red fruits interweave with cola across a smooth, weighted middle. Oak is the grounding force in the wine, holding it together and adding a toasty richness to the bright fruit profile. The finale is three parts, beginning with toasty clove and vanilla, followed by a burst of cherry compote and finishing with the lingering memory of wood spices.

Inviting and immediately enjoyable, this Merlot welcomes the nose with bright cherry, blackberry and vanilla aromas counterbalanced with subtle cherry-cola notes. On the palate, mouth filling cherry-berry tannins fold together with rich flavors of blackberry pie and juicy plum to offer a nice, rounded mouthfeel and a long finish. The generosity of this wine pairs well with a variety of dishes from slightly spicy Mexican food to good ol? home-cooked chicken pot pie.
