Smith & Son Wine Co. Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2009

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Sick of Pinot price inflation? This stunning Santa Barbara offering proves great California Pinot doesnandrsquo;t have to cost an arm and a leg. On the nose, velvety notes of raspberry, violets and vanilla accompany delightful flecks of white pepper andmdash; and a grace note of cranberry and pomegranate adds vivacity. Though itandrsquo;s amazingly full and silky-smooth on the palate, as a good Pinot Noir should be, itandrsquo;s balanced by enough acidity to make this wine a perfect addition to a host of holiday meals. A long, warming finish demands another sip. Bursting with fruit and smooth as cashmere, this terrific Pinot will stand alone, but would also enhance a variety of meals based on lamb, veal, roast turkey or duck.

A bright and beautiful Pinot Noir from sunny Santa Barbera, the Smith andamp; Son is a terrific cocktail Pinot andmdash; flavorful and smooth andmdash; but works just as well at the dinner table, pairing deliciously with salmon, chicken and vegetable dishes. Juicy maraschino cherry and fresh summer strawberry notes dominate on the palate, but the subtle spice and zesty acidity balance the fruit notes, allowing the wine to finish dry and elegantly.

A full-bodied Pinot Noir that has benefited from growing in the warm, sunny vineyards of Santa Barbara County, where the grapes are cooled by the Pacific Ocean breeze. Bestowed with highly extracted fruit and balanced with a vibrant steam of acidity, the wine features spicy vanilla aromatics and opulent cherry and pomegranate flavors. Thereandrsquo;s a lot going on here. I find it great on its own after breathing for an hour, lush but structured. With food, it harmonizes with rack of lamb and grilled salmon fillets, and itandrsquo;s versatile enough to marry well with tapas of all sorts.

Ripe berries and a touch of white pepper lead to a silky-smooth palate and delicate tannins, showing off the elegance and finesse of Santa Barbara County. A light and lovely red to be enjoyed with smoked salmon, roast turkey or seared lamb.
