Prunotto Nebbiolo Nebbiolo d'Alba Occhetti 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Alfredo Prunotto gave his name and thirty-three years of his life to this renowned winery in Piedmont. Since 1989 it has been owned by the Antinori family, who have sought to boost the already high standards by extending the vineyard holdings, including plots in the de facto grands crus of Bric Turot and Bussia. The quality of the top wines goes without saying, but the rest of the range is made with equal aplomb. The style is modern without being exaggerated: freshness of aroma and approachability of structure are viewed as positives. Grapes for this Barolo come from vineyards in the areas of Monforte, Serralunga and Castiglione Falletto. Soils are rich in chalky clay with traces of magnesium and manganese. The wine itself has a complex nose with notes of violet and forest fruits. It is floral, smoky and intensely elegant on the palate, this is Barolo at its best.

A bit closed, hard, clean, pure and ungenerous on the nose, a touch woody/woodsy, not toasted wood a bit big, a bit clumsy in the mouth on entry , quite fresh, deep but closed a bit tough, nice rigid feel, good fruit, fresh, mineral and savory, nice firm finish, fruit skin finish, savory and long, very promising.

Cleansing aromas of roast beef and carob, touches of ginseng and lightly spice French oak, clean, sapid, nice feel, almost a bit fleshy but very bright, with a nice background tone of agrumi peels and savory herbs, and a touch of French oak. Drying, a bit lean, nice balance, could use some more fruit, interesting, lots of agrumi on the finish.
