Pian Delle Vigne 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Brunello is the driest zone of Tuscany, and has a winning combination of warm days and cool nights, allowing Sangiovese to reach optimum ripeness while retaining acidity and maximising concentration. The result is one of Italy’s grandest appellations, in which Antinori bought this well-sited estate in 1995. The Pian delle Vigne estate covers a total area of 180 hectares, sixty-five of which are planted with vineyards, two with olive groves and the rest with fields and woodlands. The vineyard lies at between 130 and 200 metres above sea level and has a clay limestone soil rich in small stones. Only the best bunches of grapes were selected. The resulting wine has a complex, generous nose with ripe aromas of cherries and raspberries, light tobacco notes and hints of coffee and cocoa powder. It has a multi-layered structure with a nicely rounded texture and elegant fruit leading to a very long finish.

Not yet tasted but always in great demand. Piero Antinori makes one the very best Brunellos in a rich, full-bodied, opulent style.

Antinori's 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is a sleek, racy wine loaded with sweet dark fruit intermingled with delicate notes of tobacco and sweet toasted oak that flow from its soft-textured frame. The wine shows notable balance in this vintage, with well-integrated tannins and plenty of harmony. Ideally it might offer greater persistence and more varietal character, but this is still a very strong effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.

Has dried cherry and berry aromas, with hints of flowers, following through to a full body, with silky tannins and a delicate finish. A little reserved, but there's lots of fresh fruit and racy acidity. Best after 2010. 14,160 cases made. -JS Antinori's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is a sweet, perfumed offering. Medium in body, the wine offers up scents of tobacco, wild cherries, spices and flowers in an elegant, restrained style for this bottling. The silky, finessed tannins frame the fruit nicely and carry through all the way to the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019. Pian delle Vigne's 2004 Brunello is worlds apart from the scorching hot 2003 vintage-so different, in fact, the wine seems utterly reborn. You can smell those hallmark Sangiovese aromas: cherry, blue flower and wet earth, and taste the variety's elegant acidity. - M.L.

Weingut: AntinoriAnbauregion: Italien, ToskanaRebsorte: SangioveseInhalt: 0,75 LiterAlkoholgehalt: 13,5 Vol.%Lagerfähigkeit: 10 - 15 Jahre ab JahrgangFassreife: in Barriques gereift (24 Monate) Empfohlene Serviertemperatur: 12-16°C    Auszeichnungen91 Punkte (Jg.2003) FALSTAFF July 200891 Punkte- Wine Advocate April 30 2008 (Jg.2003)     Suche nach Rebsorten > Rote Rebsorten > Sangiovese
