this wine....this wine was absolutely phenomenal. it had enough tannic structure, but was definitely not tongue-sucking dry. it had incredible flavor, it was smooth, and it was one of the best wines we have ever had. notes of sweetness but not fruity, a beautiful brick/brown red...WOW. as with most brunelli, this wine is one to try and one to love.

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is a deeply colored, big, powerful effort. It shows masses of vibrant sweet dark fruit, smoke, tar and earth flavors with notable concentration one length on the palate. Still quite primary today, it offers outstanding potential, but a few years of patience are required. Anticipated maturity: 2008andndash;2018.

Roasted herbs, saddle leather, earth, tar, spice box and sweet cherries abound in this Sangiovese of remarkable character and complexity. A Tuscan red that is approachable now for its generous, youthful fruit, yet still showing off some evolved and refined flavors.

Soft, round and gentle when first poured, this hints at the complexities to come with a lively acidity. Some of those complex aromatics begin to develop with air, a balance of strawberry, oak char and savory herbs. Complete in a lighter style, this should drink well eight to ten years from the vintage.

Deep red-ruby. Multifaceted nose offers currant, coffee, flowers, tobacco, licorice and animal fur, along with an elegant mineral quality. Sweet, lush, and broad, but with firm acids giving the wine an impossibly light touch. Conveys an almost saline sense of extract. Wonderfully broad, dry and long on the finish, with suave tannins and captivating nuances of leather, tobacco, leather, earth and minerals.

Typical of the vintage, the 1998 Brunello di Montalcino is forward, with a gorgeous perfume of roasted herbs, saddle leather, asphalt, truffles, spice box, and sweet cherry as well as currant fruit. Round, generous, and complex, but extremely accessible and evolved, it will drink well for 7-8 years.

Always a topnotch Brunello, the 1997 is staggering in its aromatic fireworks and concentrated, long, intense flavors. Sumptuous aromas of dried Provençal herbs, roasted meats, soy, spice box, asphalt, truffles, and black fruits linger in the air. Flavors of new saddle leather are added top jammy black fruit characteristics. Opulently-textured, full-bodied, and gorgeously pure, this wine created an olfactory overload. Its low acidity, high glycerin, and huge fruit reserves suggest drinking it now and over the next 12-18 years. Mamma Mia!
