Palladino Biferno Rosso Riserva 2009

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in London's Kensington [www.nicolas.co.uk ] for £8. Biferno is a DOC created in the 1980's for red, white and rose wines in the Molise region of central Italy on the Adriatic side opposite Naples. Palladino [www.palladinovini.com ] is a winery in the Asti region although the back label says bottled by Grazia of Fossalto di Piave which is 40 miles north of Venice but the shop website says it is made by a co-operative called Camillo de Lellis. It consists of 70% montepulciano,a native Italian grape named after the town of that name halfway between Florence and Rome and the second most widely planted grape in central and southern Italy.15% is aglinico,a grape brought to Italy from Greece in classical times and 15% is the white grape trebbiano [called ugni blanc in France ] The wine spent 18 months in oak barrels. I started the bottle last night with my pizza supper and I did enjoy it although it is a little unusual to taste. There is plenty of a slightly sweet cherry and menthol type fruit there and the tannins are soft.It went well with the pizza though.
