J. Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon Carol's Vyd. St. Helena Napa Valley 2012

External Review by WineExpress.com:

Founded more than three decades ago by Jerry Lohr, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines crafts an array of acclaimed wines from estate grapes. Know primarily for their Central Coast wines, this Cab is from their Napa Valley vineyard in St. Helena, prime terroir for Cabernet. The vineyard is about 20 acres of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot; well-drained, gravelly, sandy loam soil and ideal conditions bring concentrated ripe fruit. This is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. The wine is is aged in 60% new French oak barrels for 16 months. I scored a 95 point Platinum award in the Winemakers Challenge Wine Competition. They said "J. Lohr has been sourcing Cabernet Sauvignon from this vineyard for a while now, and this bottling really shows that they've paid close attention to how to handle it. It's the best I've tasted to date, showing classic Napa character with blackberry, currants, faint dried herbs, pepper and moderate oak spice in both aroma and flavor profiles, with supple tannins, food friendly acidity and a long finish. I'd let this age a few years for full integration. Very well made."

Founded in 1972, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines crafts an array of acclaimed wines from estate vineyards in Monterey County, Paso Robles and Napa Valley. From this world-class palette of fruit, J. Lohr produces three tiers of award-winning wines – J. Lohr Estates, J. Lohr Vineyard Series and J. Lohr Cuvée Series. Selecting Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco appellation for his original vineyard, Jerry planted his first 280 acres of grapes beginning in 1972. Ideally suited for cool-climate winegrowing, these vineyards have become an acclaimed source for outstanding Chardonnay, Riesling, Valdiguié and Pinot Noir. At the heart of J. Lohr’s renowned red wine program are its 2,000 acres of estate vineyards in Paso Robles. Featuring warm, sunny days, cool nights and diverse soils, these vineyards have proven ideal for cultivating a flavorful array of grapes including voluptuous and complex Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc along with Syrah and Zinfandel.
