Hedges Cms 2008

Member Review by VancDarkstar:

Not overly aromatic, dark cherry, raisin, toast. 46% Cabernet, 48% Merlot, 6% Syrah. Medium bodied and relatively balanced. Flavors tend to thin out over time. Should improve a bit over the next few years. Overall a pleasant wine. Easy to find.

Hedges Family Estate:
We used inspiration and determination to create a distinctive place to grow the grapes that We hoped would be well-suited to the terroir. Building a French chateau was a natural way to bring our Old World family's heritage to Eastern Washington.

Young, bright, sharply defined, this brings berry and cranberry fruit in a blend of Caberbet Sauvignon, Merlot and a splash of Syrah. Hints of pepper and herb suggest this as a companion to, say, lamb sausage. Then, as the wine opens in the glass, cherry candy comes on strong. Very pretty.

For the first time this popular blend contains no Yakima Valley fruit. The savvy blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah works like a charm. Outside of the Ste. Michelle brands, this is probably the most consistent, balanced and expressive red wine blend that is value-priced and widely available from Washington state. Itrsquo;s elegant, somewhat European in style, with light, polished fruit flavors of plum, berry and cherry.

A wonderfully fragrant blend, supple and loaded with berries and darker notes of licorice and coffee. This is sophisticated and European in style mdash; meaning lighter alcohol and less sugar mdash; but in return you get substance and grip. Though itrsquo;s built for near-term drinking, therersquo;s nothing light or insubstantial here; and the mouthfeel is that of a much more expensive wine.

The blend is half Cab and half Merlot and a splash of Syrah; hence the moniker C-M-S. A full 20% of the fruit comes from the wineryrsquo;s vineyards in the Red Mountain AVA. It captures the complexity of far more expensive red blends, with a succinct mix of red fruits, mineral and fresh-roasted coffee-bean flavors. This and the wineryrsquo;s superb blended white wine may be the two best bargains in Washington.

Classic, rich and supple; this tastes like a far more expensive wine. It has a European polish, mixing plum, berry and cherry fruit with darker streaks of tar, coffee and smoke. The 13.5% alcohol is perfectly ripe and stylish, and the wine has good length, precision and complexity.

On the light side, with pretty cherry and raspberry flavors lurking under a floral, peppery layer of tannins, finishing crisp. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2005.
