Francis Ford Coppola Chardonnay Russian River Valley Director's Cut 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Since its inception, the Francis Coppola Diamond Collection has been an expansive endeavor to create consistently high-quality wines that are pure expressions of each varietal. We sought out vineyard sites across California, which would ensure superior grapes year-after-year, and we employ precise winemaking techniques to showcase the true character of our fruit. This enterprise has become a true labor of love. We invite you to share it with us. Winemaker’s notes We source our Chardonnay grapes from two distinct vineyards in Monterey. One is located near the Gabilan mountain range where the soil composition is predominantly loamy sand. This condition offers ideal drainage, which then concentrates the flavors of the fruit. The other vineyard, located in the Arroyo Seco, is positioned on the valley floor where the temperatures remain relatively cool. As a result, the fruit from this region maintains a crisp acidity. When we blend the wine from these two regions together, we achieve a lovely balance and greater complexity. Once our Chardonnay is harvested, we use a whole-cluster press and split fermentation technique where half of the fruit is fermented in French oak, and the other half is fermented in stainless steel. Additionally, we put the wine that was fermented in wood through malolactic fermentation in order to achieve a lightly creamy texture. The 2006 vintage experienced a long, cool growing season, which is ideal for Chardonnay. In fact, 2006 is considered the best white grape vintage of the last ten years in Monterey. When you taste the quality of this wine, it becomes quite apparent. Pear and flowers on the nose with light oaky notes; more white fruit on the palate along with butter and toast, and a shorter finish. Acidic, but not unbalanced; should pair well with food. Not great QPR in my opinion but pretty well-made and undeniably decent overall.

This Chardonnay from Francis Ford Coppola is whole-cluster crushed and then ferment entirely in French oak barrels to achieve a silky, seductive texture. Profuse aromatics of honeysuckle, orange blossoms, and ripe pear are folded into classic Russian River flavors of green apple, tropical fruit, and citrus. 12 months in 50% new French oak, 50% 1-2 year old oak; 100% chardonnay; 14.2% alcohol.

Wine Tasting NotesWe crushed our Chardonnay whole-cluster and then fermented it entirely in French oak barrels to achieve a seductive, round texture with quintessential Russian River Valley flavors of green apple, honeysuckle, and sweet vanilla with citrus notes. Its sweet perfume previews its palate with hints of honeysuckle, crisp apple, and orange blossoms.
