Fitou Vignerons de Cascastel 2016

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine last year the last time I was in Calais and I seem to recall that it was not expensive. Fitou is an appellation in Languedoc created in 1948 [although there has been viticulture here since before the Romans ]for red wines from nine communes around the village of that name located about 15 miles north of the town of Perpignan. My bottle is from a large co-operative group and consists of 50% carignan,35% grenache and 15% syrah.I started it last night with my supper of roast beef.It is a full bodied wine with plenty of blackcurrant and cherry style fruit and a hint of spice especially on the finish with fairly soft tannins. It was smooth and easy drinking. It could possibly do with a little more structure but it was enjoyable and a good match for the roast beef

The Maîtres Vignerons du Paradis (Master Wine Growers of Paradise ) is a  co-operative group of wine growers from 3 villages (Cascastel, Fraisse et St Jean de Barrou) founded in 1921 and situated in the upper Fitou region, 20 km from the Mediterranean sea. The origin of these villages goes back to the IXth century but numerous remains give reason to believe that the site has been occupied since before the Gallo-Roman period. The exceptional land of schists and chalk allows the production of wines of great quality : the A.O.C. Fitou, A.O.C. Corbières, A.O.C. Muscat de Rivesaltes and A.O.C. Rivesaltes and Vin de Pays of the Valley of Paradis. The Master Wine Growers of Paradise currently group 150 wine growers with vineyards of a total surface area of 800 hectares which produce an average of 35000 hectolitres of wine of which 90 % is A.O.C. Each year our wines are recognised with awards in the different national and international wine competitions and in the wine guides. Read less
