Etude Pinot Noir Carneros Napa Valley Signature Series 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Enthusiast Review Rated 93 A huge wine, almost Rhone-like in its dark color, thick mouthfeel and cherry flavors. But those cherries are really exotic, suggesting liqueur, and pies spiced with cinnamon, anise, nutmeg and mocha, along with the smoky, buttery sweet pie crust. For all the immediate appeal, it has the tannins and acids to age for a good six years. Wine Tasting Notes Pure fruit aromas of raspberry cream, orange zest with hints of baking spice and vanilla bean begin the nose of this graceful Pinot Noir. The palate bursts with flavors of dark cherry and cardamom spice that are supported by round, fine-grained tannins. The wine has a tenor of minerality that lifts the fruit and brings some liveliness to this Pinot Noir, which will contribute to the wine's longevity.

Etude Wines is dedicated to mastering the craft of winegrowing. In classical music, an etude is a composition with a technical focus that allows the musician to practice a particular technique. Similarly, Etude wines are the product of deliberate concentration on the instructive variables of the craft. The end game is not edification alone, but rather the wine itself as a source of enjoyment. Chopin piano etudes are notoriously difficult but sublimely beautiful… this is an example of the practicing craft transformed to art. Founder and self described winegrower Tony Soter puts it this way: “There’s no better vehicle with which to study or practice the craft of winemaking than Pinot Noir. It is the most challenging, unforgiving and quixotic of all wine grapes, and yet the most delicate and transparent.” “Make no mistake it is a humbling pursuit, but when it’s right, Pinot Noir is a glorious and moving thing. It is in the pursuit of that experience that we all work.” Laboring alongside Soter in this oenological quest for perfection are veteran winemaker Jon Priest and viticulturalist Franci Ashton. Together, this talented trio works to transform the very finest Carneros and Napa Valley grapes into world-class wines sought out by the most discriminating wine lovers. In addition to its widely acclaimed Carneros Pinot Noir and legendary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Etude has also developed a loyal following for Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Merlot. Read less

Bright cherry and earth notes on the nose with a little peppery and spice on the palate. Dark fruits and blackberries start to appear as the taste lingers, an edgier finish with the tannins present, needs a little more time but very elegant

Good, tight Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir that exposes its personality reluctantly. Pure cool-climate Pinot Noir aromas followed by somewhat tart, spicy cherry and pomegranate fruit. Some tannin still obvious in the texture, clean finish. Not very warm-hearted at this point, and it suffered significantly next to an outstanding Ponzi Reserve from Oregon.

Solid California Pinot Tasted March 2011 Transparent ruby with black cherry shadows. Smell of prunes and damp roots. Medium-weight complex and satisfying body: It displays chewy, with some acid and some oak. Flavors are simple but full – sweet candy flavors balanced by pleasant white pepper. Finish is short and metallic. Overall the Pinot is delicious and satisfying. We tasted it against a Grand Cru Red Burgundy from ’07 and the Etude won hands down. For the money I might prefer some of the higher-end Saintsbury pinots like the “Lee Vineyard.” Review remains property of C. Elliot

Had this at a trendy steakhouse in Boston (KO Prime). Very solid Pinot that held up well to a very nice hanger Steak. 3.5 on the wine but down to 3 by the price as despite being a good wine it's not one I'd chase down to have a few bottles at home.

Wine Tasting NotesOur goal is to produce a distinctly styled Pinot Noir of the highest quality, a wine that can satisfy any Burgundian urge and yet be proud of its California roots. The Estate bottling offers inviting cool climate aromatics of raspberry, pomegranate and sandalwood with a touch of turned earth. Classically structured, the palate bursts with flavors of sweet frambois strawberries, red cherries and mocha. The lush fruit combined with the baking spice notes from aging in French oak creates a defined Pinot Noir with elegance and length.

Medium red. Pure strawberry and raspberry aromas. Supple and fairly rich, with red fruit flavors complicated by spices, leather, earth and smoke. The pliant finish features sweet tannins. This boasts very good fruit but comes across as a tad lower-toned than some recent vintage, with more secondary aromas. - Tanzer ** Only 7 in Stock **
