Clos du Bois didn’t start small and build up like many other wineries - it started with a bang. When it produced its first vintage in 1974, it already had 520 acres under vine in Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County. When Frank Woods was coming up with the name for his winery, he thought of “Woods Winery,” obviously named after himself, but his children had something else in mind. They were taking French at the time, and instead of “Woods Winery,” they thought of “Clos du Bois,” which loosely translates to “enclosure in the woods.” Obviously the name stuck, and Clos du Bois was born. Since then, Clos du Bois has come a long way. From 520 acres, the winery has expanded to 925 acres of their own, along with many partnerships with other wineries. Instead of partnering with a few, large vineyards, the winery works with many small- and medium-sized growers across numerous appellations. Most of the grapes it purchases from other vineyards are from Sonoma County, but some come from Coastal California as well. Marlstone is the signature red from Clos du Bois. The five Bordeaux varietals are sourced from the best hillside and benchland vineyards in Alexander Valley for this iconic blend. Founded in 1974, Clos du Bois has been producing oustanding Sonoma County wines for decades and their Marlstone has always been a standout. this is the 2007 vintage which brought immense character and intensity as well as beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon which dominated the blend. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. The wine was aged for 24 months in French oak barrels (95% new) after the winemaker determined this final blend. The wine shows an inky black and ruby red color. On the nose the 2007 Marlstone exudes complex aromas of wild blackberry, plum and black licorice with lively notes of cigar box and brown spice. On the palate it's concentrated and rich, with supple tannins. More wild berry and bold spice flavors carry through to a lengthy finish with velvety notes of mocha. This is a big, over-stuffed Cab that will cellar nicely for 5-8 years. Limited!
