Clayhouse Malbec Paso Robles 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Pencil shavings and bright, precise fruit on the nose. Really intense aromatics with white pepper, grilled gamy meat, freshly roasted coffee beans and red currant jam, nuanced lemon rind and violet notes. This has a bit of an extracted feel to it but with masses of sweet fruit helping to buffer the formidable tannins. Absolutely packed with fruit that has a touch of a leathery edge but remains fresh and vibrant with lovely boysenberry and black plum tones. More fruit than spice driven on the palate with some roasted herb and meat notes on the back end leading to a rich, chewy yet balanced vanilla laced long finish Absolutely exuberant to drink! 92pts

Grapefruits and pears for days. All around solid purchase. Nice creamy mid-palate when you let it sit in your mouth for a while.

Great wine to introduce to people. The floral aromas are very strong and can be smelled as soon as the bottle is opened. Great summer wine.

This is one of the vineyards that stood out during our annual trip to California. The Clayhouse Petite Sirah 2007 is an excellent wine. This region is big agriculture and Paso Robles is not a great tourist destination if you are into B&B's, but the wines are excellent, while prices are affordable. We tend to stay in Sonoma (great vineyards), visit Napa (also great vineyards, but overcrowded) and now plan to visit Paso Robles each year. I suspect in time their prices will rise, but right now you can get some excellent wines at half the price of similar grade wines to the north. Next on our list is Oregon....

Made in a refreshing aperitif style, Clayhouse Sauvignon Blanc exhibits a bouquet of starfruit, green pear, honeydew melon and grapefruit, with a hint of grass. There's a touch of minerality that enhances the floral notes contributed by the Musque clone, and the wine finishes with a creamy mouthfeel (from sur lie fermentation and aging) and mouthwatering acidity. - WineryHarvest Date(s): August 31-October 1, 2010Harvest Brix: 21.5-23.8 degreespH: 3.29Total Acidity: 7.1 g/lAlcohol: 13.0%Oak Age: NoneBottling Date: February 22-23, 2011Case Production: 2,500CLOSURE TYPE: Stelvin screw cap ** SOLD OUT **

Here's a nice, refreshingly clean Sauvignon Blanc that shows a lot of class for the price. It's basically dry, with a honeyed finish to the green melon, golden mango and Asian pear flavors. There's just a touch of tart green gooseberry for complexity. - S.H.

Malbec is ideal when youre thirsting for something dark, bold and full of flavor. Its a wine that adeptly balances fruit and zippy acidity with hints of vanilla oak. Our new Malbec is dark and rich, with black plum, raspberry and cranberry aromas. Theres a hint of black pepper to complement the vanilla oak. Its fruit- forward in the mouth, with an extended finish of soft tannins and spice.
