Chateau St Jean Fume Blanc le Petite Etoile Vineyard 2013

Member Review by WineborkDotCom:

This "bottom tier" Pinot from Chateau St. Jean is really quite impressive for the price. Varietal character is excellent, with a firm core of dark cherry and plum flavors, subtle spiciness, and attractive rose-like floral notes. If these characteristics were paired with a bit more depth, this would be a gem. Even so, extremely fairly priced for a Pinot Noir of this quality.

Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. A real bargain. Full of citrus and bone dry.

A young and bitter wine with a hot and harsh finish. Any fruit (unripened cherry) that might reach the palate is quickly destroyed by the alcohol. This wine should be taken as a shot then chased with something mild like vodka.

Light fruity aroma, soft tannins, raspberry plum flavor with buttery oak finish.

Parker rated the 2006 vintage at 89. I bought the '07 vintage for $11.99 and greatly enjoyed its sprightly fruit flavor and freshness. I will be buying more.

This single vineyard selection is always a stand out for Chateau St. Jean. Partially barrel fermented and aged in oak it takes on depth and complexity that most Sauv Balncs in this price range never achieve. Robert Parker scored this 2009 91 points and said "Readers looking for a bevy of outstanding white wines at remarkably fair prices need look no further than the copious number of selections from Chateau St. Jean. There’s a lot to like ... This winery has long been one of the leaders in producing Loire Valley-styled Sauvignon Blancs, which they call Fume Blanc. My favorite (but only marginally so) is one of their classics, the 2009 Fume Blanc La Petite Etoile. I expect discounters to sell this for $15-17. It is an intense wine with notes of lime oil intermixed with lemon blossom, fig, grapefruit and melons. Medium-bodied, rich, and fruity, it should drink nicely for another 1-2 years."
