Castle Rock Pinot Noir Sonoma County 2013

Member Review by mwid625:

Wine has a pretty color and has a nose of earth and black pepper. The taste is where this wine fails - consisting of notes of dirty barnyard and excessive spiciness. Bitter finish. Not what I would expect from a California Pinot.

Cola and baking spice on the nose. Medium bodied cherries and tree bark flavors with a nice prickly finish. More body than a typical Pinot. Like it.

Big chocolate on the nose! Medium richness, simple red fruit. $14

A fruit driven Pinot that has lots of raspberry and some smoky tones that make you think of a big stone pizza oven. Seek out Castle Rock, the quality to price ratio is high. Nice wine for Pizza!

The wine was average, their Pinot of the same vintage from Oregon is far superior.

This Castle Rock Pinot Noir is produced from grapes grown in Sonoma County, which is recognized as one of the finest Pinot Noir growing regions in California. Here, the marine influences from the Pacific Ocean provide cooling breezes which give ideal conditions for Pinot Noir grapes, characterized by rich crisp fruit flavors. This elegant well-balanced wine offers aromas of red fruit and spice. On the palate, there are flavors of plum and cherry with oak nuances, and the finish is long and harmonious. - Winery

A light, jammy Pinot Noir filled with bright fruit and subtle spicy layers that create a smooth and textured wine. The tannins are light on the palate and the style is more Burgundian than typical California Pinot, with herbal notes (black tea and earth) and black cherry and plum flavors. The finish is especially long for a light-bodied Pinot, allowing a wider variety of potential pairings such as salmon, lamb and even pork.

A sound, everyday Pinot Noir, showing the silky elegance that typifies the variety. It has thinly pleasant flavors of cherries and cola. - S.H.

From a producer with a great many appellations in each vintage, their least expensive may actually be their best; the California Cuvée for 2008 has a nice core of ripe red fruit and medium (almost full) body; engaging spicy notes echo on the smooth and velvety finish.
