Castillo de Monseran:
Castillo de Monseran is a value-driven wine brand out of Cariñena, Spain. The label depicts a Medieval castle, which is not an uncommon site in this historic region. Their wines focus on the two main grapes of the area, Garnacha for reds and Viura for whites. Some gentle oak tones add to the bouquet of forest floor, dried tarragon, dried bitter orange zest, sweet medicinal herbs and light strawberry fruit. A touch of that dried orange is followed by a lovely fresh mouthful of wine. This has nicely managed tannins and juicy, if integrated, acidity supporting a slightly earthy, oak-framed core of clear, if slightly rustic, fruit. Very well-balanced with a round feel that has enough structure to lend it some texture and mouthgrab. A lovely effort and one that is particularly food-friendly. 88pts

This is a wonderful value red that is red with purple hues upon the look and has great clarity! Fruit forward aromas of cherry, strawberry, and blackberry/blueberry warmth, along with black soil and some spice in the background. Flavors follow the aromas nicely and this is very juicy! The ripe berry character comes through very well and provides a super smooth mouthfeel that is velvety to say the least! Another winner for under $10

Nice inexpensive Grenache, Aromas of plum and raspberry, smooth on the palate, long lasting finish and a deep satisfying wine aura. Balanced with mild but noticeable tannins

Wild flowers, dirt, old leather, tobacco, walnuts and red fruit on the nose. Palate opens with high notes of tangy mango, raspberry and blueberry, underscored by black dirt and tart berries, then walnuts and caramel, all encompassed by a zesty acidity laced with strawberry syrup. Medium finish displays in a velvety mouthfeel with a fruit-filled zing just before before dryness sets in. At the price, a real value and worth keeping in the closet for an easy drinking garnacha.

With an extremely long finish this wine is sure to please! Slight caramelized and spicy aroma. Woody, nutty.

Castillo de Monseran is located in Carinena, Spain. This is the region in Spain known as the birthplace of the Garnacha, aka Grenache grape variety. Castillo de Monseran is part of the Bodegas San Valero cooperative owned by more than 700 small independent growers with an average of 9 acres of vines, all known for their extremely low yields and exceptional quality. Parcels are fermented using techniques to preserve the characters of the terroir in the final wine and to produce a ‘New World’ style of Garnacha bursting with fresh fruit. The wine for this bottling is carefully selected by the Guarachi Wine Partners, producers of the world class Montes, Bodega Norton and Kaiken wines in South America, the Guarachi Family, Tensley and Tenshen wines in California and many others others. This is their only Spanish wine and the focus is on excellent quality and outstanding value. It's a Best Buy in Wine Enthusiast Magazine and the Wine Spectator said "Ripe plum and chocolate flavors have a slightly candied character in this round, supple red, backed by sweet-tart acidity and light tannins that give way to a fresh finish." A steal!!

Cariñena is often cited as the birthplace of Grenache and Castillo de Monséran is dedicated to producing wines exclusively of this varietal. Lots of big ripe fruit but not over the top shows the dedication to the old-world style of winemaking.

Tasting Notes:

A soft full flavored wine with intense color and a well balanced red fruit finish.

Castillo de Monseran comes from the region of Carinena, in the heart of Aragon and the home of the Garnacha grape.
