Buehler Vineyards Zinfandel Napa Valley 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes we choose for our 2007 Buehler Vineyards Napa Valley Zinfandel are a mix of those off our estate vineyards and grapes from other select Napa Valley high quality, low-yielding vineyards. Dry-farmed for over 20 years, our 4.5 acre estate block consists of mature thirty-seven year old vines which typically give us around 2.5 tons/acre of beautiful hillside zinfandel fruit. Interspersed among the head-trained vines are a handful of Petite Sirah vines representing perhaps 5% of the total vines in this block. A traditional field companion to Zinfandel in pre-prohibition California vineyards, Petite Sirah contributes pepper, color, and tannin structure to the wine. The 2007 growing season was ideally suited to Zinfandel in Napa Valley. Even ripening conditions were the norm from Spring through August. We harvested at the tail end of the first week of September making it as close to an "average" harvest in terms of picking dates as you can get. Our Zinfandel is aged for 11 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, 20% of which are new. At this level of new wood, the up-front endearing quality of Zinfandel can assert itself. Aromas of a briar patch on a hot summer day carry over to the palate and are carried in a mouth-filling, flavorful, juicy package. The wine is crafted for immediate enjoyment but for those who enjoy a more complex wine displaying some bottle-aged character, aging for another two to three years is a good option. Buehler Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery located in the mountains east of St. Helena in Napa Valley. Situated north of Pritchard Hill and Conn Valley, near the base of Howell Mountain, our hillside vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller blocks of old-vine Zinfandel. Our family has been farming this beautiful estate for thirty-six years. We combine that experience and the unique terroir of our hillside vineyards with low yields, meticulous vineyard management, and minimalist winemaking techniques to create wines of uncommon complexity and depth, and to present these wines to wine lovers at reasonable prices. Beautiful wine - a little harsh on the nose (pepper/spice a bit over done)so a bit too peppery and spicy for my Zinfandel taste - a little more fruit on the nose for me is better - excellent finish and good drinking wine - 90 pts....not exactly but a great Zin with lots of potential - tried it twice over 7 months and it did get better - a little more age and maybe 90 pts it will earn. Good price point though!

A perpetual Best Buy, Buehler Vineyards is Napa Valley’s best kept secret. John Buehler started the winery in the ‘70’s and has been producing stellar wines and pricing them right ever since. As Matt Kramer notes in his New California Wine book: “This is a winery that has settled into admirable consistency, high quality and fair pricing. Bravo!” This Zinfandel scored 90 points in Wine Spaectator who said: "Soft and elegant, this has a delicate sense of complexity, offering floral raspberry and cherry aromas, with juicy, layered plum and spicy cinnamon flavors that linger on the lively finish." not sponsored by or affiliated with The Wine Spectator, The Wine Advocate or the International Wine Cellar. This item excluded from any other discounts or offers beyond the 15% case discount.
