Baumard Coteux du Layon Carte d'Or 2000

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.cellartrade.co.uk for £9.The Coteaux du Layon is an appellation created in 1950.although viticulture here goes back centuries, for sweet white wines made of the chenin blanc grape [called pineau de Loire in this area] from 27 communes to the south of the town of Angers along the river Layon,a tributary of the Loire.. Domaine Beaumard is a leading producer and this cuvee is made from old vines and is unoaked. I started the bottle last night with a plate of cheese The wine was a dark amber, nearly brown colour.and it was very sweet almost like honey or syrup. There was an apricot style fruit with a hint of citrus. It was a very good accompaniment to the cheese.

Domaine des Baumard:
The domaine is located about 12 miles to the south of the town of Angers in the Loire valley and has been in the Baumard family since 1634.It is now run by Floren Baumard who took over from his father Jean in 1992 He has 40 hectares under vine scattered over a number of Loire valley appellations.A range of red, rose, white and sparkling wines are produced and the Domaine is particularly noted for dry and sweet wines made of the chenin blanc  grape
