Max’s Wine Dive - Washington Corridor
(713) 880-8737
4720 Washington Ave
Houston, TX 77007
Specialty: If all you want is wine, there are plenty of places to go. There are more romantic places and places with better service. However, if you plan on having a weekend brunch any time soon, Max’s is definitely the place to go. Enjoy a delicious Kobe beef burger while sipping on your favorite red wine and watch all of your troubles melt away.
Good: Delicious food, especially if you’re looking to go for brunch on a weekend. Great place to hang out for a bite.
Bad: Don’t expect to have a romantic dinner here – it’s always very crowded and the atmosphere is not ideal for a quiet night out.
13 Celsius - Midtown
(713) 529-8466
3000 Caroline St
Houston, TX 77004
Specialty: 13 Celsius isn’t some hole-in-the-wall bar – with open seating areas, booths, and plenty of room to maneuver, its appearance is more like that of a restaurant. The exposed brick walls give the place a nice feel as well. There’s even outdoor seating available if you want to enjoy the weather.
Good: The atmosphere is relaxing, especially for groups. There’s a lot of seating, so waiting long isn’t often a problem. The panini and the meat and cheese plates are very flavorful.
Bad: Servers are not always knowledgeable, and it often takes some time to get a server’s attention. If you aren’t in a hurry, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Good: Delicious cuisine, befitting wine list, attentive servers, and a very relaxing atmosphere make Ibiza perfect for romantic evenings for two.
Bad: While the cuisine is reasonably priced, it’s still expensive. However, the price tag is appropriate, even low, for the quality of the food and the service.
(713) 526-9463
2720 Richmond Ave
Houston, TX 77098
Specialty: Don’t judge this book by its cover: despite its exterior, Sonoma is a cozy and comfortable wine bar that offers a wide selection of wines and a well-designed menu. There are couches, a fireplace, and there’s even live music from time to time. They have a back room where you can host parties, and there are wine tasting events. If you’re looking for a romantic evening, or just a relaxing evening with friends, Sonoma is the place for you.
Good: Dimly lit and a relaxing atmosphere. Special deals daily, including 50% off pizza on Thursdays, personal wine classes, and $5 wine tastings on Saturdays.
Bad: Exterior might be deceiving – it’s a lot better looking inside than outside. Parking can be a hassle, so carpool if you can.
The Coffee Groundz - Midtown, Fourth Ward
(713) 874-0082
2503 Bagby St
Houston, TX 77006
Specialty: This isn’t your typical wine bar. In fact, it can barely be classified as a wine bar at all. However, there’s no denying its place on this list for one reason: it’s one of the best casual hangouts in the area. Want a place to write that dissertation of yours while sampling some liquid inspiration? The wine list is very accessible with categories like “Bright, Crisp, Refreshing” and “Bold, Ripe, Luxurious,” and the wines are very affordable. Regular events take place, and there’s free wifi and power outlets. You can even place orders via Twitter! It’s definitely a good place to hang out and relax by yourself or with a few friends.
Good: Casual atmosphere, free wifi, and power outlets littered around the area make The Coffee Groundz the perfect lounge. Inexpensive wine and a great selection of food and snacks, including gelato, make this place perfect to return to for any occasion.
Bad: The Coffee Groundz doesn’t have a wine bar atmosphere, and few people would even classify it as such. However, it still fulfills all of the requirements to make it the perfect place to relax and sip a glass of wine.
