Name of varietal: Verdejo
Common synonyms: Palido
Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Rueda, Spain
History of the grape: Verdejo has existed in the region for centuries, thought to have first been planted by the Moors who settled there in the 12th century. But like many indigenous white grapes in Spain, it was mostly wiped out during the late 19th century Phylloxera crisis, and replanted with other grapes from hybrid vines that are easier to grow, like Palomino. However, in the 1970s, Bodega Marques de Riscal saw the potential in reviving traditional local grapes and replanted Verdejo in Rueda. Other bodegas followed and today, Verdejo is the signature grape of the region. Since barrel aging masks the inherent bright flavors of the varietal, most of the wines are produced to be consumed young and fresh.
Characteristics of the grape: bright, fresh, acidic, lemon, green apple, pear, kiwi, grassy, fennel, mushroom.

Rueda of this quality and price is a treat - the nose is full of perfume from sweet garden flowers plus a hefty infusion of peach. On the tongue there is spritely brightness - acidity, apple, and more peach; the mouth-feel is excellent with a well balanced, slightly dry entry. Finish is rich and of medium length. Excellent bargain. 89 points. Read More

Want a cheaply priced wine that works at any outdoor gathering - especially with white meats or seafood? This may be your choice. A wine with peach notes on the nose and some allspice that also penetrates on entry, this Castilian number is good value. Not elegant or particularly subtle, but fairly soft and flavourful enough for everyday quaffi... Read More

This wine is the colour of many Rías Baixas wines I've enjoyed over the years ... years ... the credit-worthy Verdejo component. Good acidity and more peach on the palate with a fruity, lingering finish. Some bitterness on the follow-through, but this is a most elegant wine to make an Iberian proud. 88 points. Grab these while you ca Read More
