Name of varietal: Verdejo
Common synonyms: Palido
Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Rueda, Spain
History of the grape: Verdejo has existed in the region for centuries, thought to have first been planted by the Moors who settled there in the 12th century. But like many indigenous white grapes in Spain, it was mostly wiped out during the late 19th century Phylloxera crisis, and replanted with other grapes from hybrid vines that are easier to grow, like Palomino. However, in the 1970s, Bodega Marques de Riscal saw the potential in reviving traditional local grapes and replanted Verdejo in Rueda. Other bodegas followed and today, Verdejo is the signature grape of the region. Since barrel aging masks the inherent bright flavors of the varietal, most of the wines are produced to be consumed young and fresh.
Characteristics of the grape: bright, fresh, acidic, lemon, green apple, pear, kiwi, grassy, fennel, mushroom.

  • Vinicola de Castilla Macabeo Vino de la Tierra de Castilla Senorio de Guadianeja Blanco 2004

Steely light yellow with the smallest bubbles adhereing to the sides. Nice ... ... gewerztraminer and viura or verdejo. As it warms the whtie flower quality of the nose becomes more prevelant, while a faint nuttiness that I can't quite put my finger on shows through. Nice C4+A11+T15+O7=87 [8 Read More
