Syrah

Parentage: Offspring of Dureza & Mondeuse Blanche
Aliases: Shiraz, Hermitage, Antourenein Noir, Candive, Marsanne Noir...
Grape Color: Black
Regions: Rhone (France), California AVAs, Australia
Type(s) of Wine the Grape Produces:

Syrah. Shiraz. Sirac. Schiras. Marsanne Noir. The names can go on endlessly to describe one of the most powerful red wine-producing grapes in the world.

The irony here is that Syrah’s origins could give Carmen Sandiego a run for her international wallet. Syrah’s deepest rooted history lies in the Rhone region of Southwestern France, as the wines that made this varietal famous were from hermitage, located in northern Rhone. The name “Shiraz,” however, gained popularity in Australia where this dark-skinned varietal has long been heavily planted. The birthplace of Syrah is still unknown, with many legends linking together both its aliases, suggesting origins in Iran, Rhone, and Australia.

Syrah is used primarily for producing strong red wines Read more »

  • Halcon Alturas Yorkville Highlands 2015

    Snoothrank:

This is the second of three bottles that I bought, I do remember the first one that I opened a couple years ago. I did not write any notes, but I remember it as an enjoyable wine--which is, I'm sure, the most negative evaluation I have ever given to an Alturas. This one opens with a nice, unobtrusive introduction of blackberry. Very nice aci... Read More

  • Borsao Berola 2010

    Snoothrank:

Browny-red in color and there is a lovely murkyness of suspended particulate that is not taking anything away from the liquid. Huge smoky spice and vanilla oak immediately on the nostrils followed by tinge of cranberry, blackberry and chokecherry after aggressive swirling....perhaps some slight alcohol burn in the nose as well but it is smooth.... Le Vieux Pin that makes Syrah and they did a number of single vineyard ones recently.  A wine shop near me had a couple of them, one was 25 cases.  I couldn't believe they actually got some of that.  It was $39 and really good, as good as their $100 syrah.  Of course, ... Apsara '14 Whole Cluster Syrah just 3 weeks ago and it was really good.  The CFO prefers the regular Las Madres syrah but I quite enjoy the bit of funk that the whole cluster version shows. • Apsara Syrah Las Madres Vineyard Whole Cluster 2014

    Snoothrank:

Very similar, I see, to my previous report. Pretty--more blue than red--purple color in the glass. Bright red fruit--cranberry, plum--on the tip of the tongue. Some minerality, mid-palate. Very sedate tannin. Some "spritziness" on the tongue which I would attribute to acid. Read More

  • The Ojai Vineyard Roll Ranch Syrah 2015

    Snoothrank:

Very attractive plum color in the glass. Some "sourness" in the nose. Blackberry and prune on the tip of the tongue. Then some slate. A fairly big wine, especially, when compared to other Ojai reds I've had, lately. Similarly, more tannin than I have seen in recent Ojai wines. I think this wine can improve with several years of aging. On ... Read More

  • I like the spiciness and boldness of Syrah. I haven't tasted many, but the majority were from California, Russian River Valley. I would like to try a French Syrah. Any recommendations on a rocky and floral wine>?
