Sémillon

Common synonyms: Wyndruif (South Africa)

Parentage of the grape: undetermined, likely native to Bordeaux and/or surroundings

History of the grape: Little is documented about the early years of this grape, which is surprising due to its distinguished popularity in the regions where it is grown. It has been used in quality production in France, in the areas in and around Bordeaux for centuries. It is there that it is found in elegant dry white wines, most often blended with Sauvignon Blanc. But perhaps even more importantly, its predisposition for Botrytis cinerea (a.k.a. “noble rot”), which has an astounding effect on the grape (as long as it is healthy), pinpointing its sugars and aromas for the Cadillac of sweet wine, Chateau d’Yquem of Sauternes. • Chateau Ferran Blanc 2016

    Snoothrank:

The Ferran blanc seems steeped in citrus (grapefruit and lime sharpness) on the ... grapefruit peel and a little semillon musk on the finish. Elegant for the price and a second bottle would come easy... 9 Read More

  • Chateau Rahoul Blanc 2016

    Snoothrank:

The Chateau Rahoul Blanc 2016 is delicious; it presents as pale yellow in the glass, and the nose is of newly mown grass and (predominantly) lemon oil. The entry is spicy (ginger and pepper), with lemon and tropical fruit. A strong, peppery, lingering finish. Excellent value, and shows the genius of the Dourthe family. 89. Read More

  • Carbonnieux Carbonnieux Blanc Pessac-Leognan 2015

    Snoothrank:

The 2015 Carbonnieux has that inviting citric, acidic gooseberry nose which is ... there seems to be lots of Semillon (20%, officially) which makes the entry less herbal and very white berry fresh. This is a mature, balanced and well-made wine with exceptional elegance ( a wide range of soft integrated flavours, e. g.). A triumph. 9 Read More

  • Read up on Lindeman's thread, and thought this would be a good topic to discuss. To Greg's point about blending Merlot and sometimes Cabernet in with Chianti blends, I hear that trend had been on the downswing, which is probably a good thing for Chianti proper, though there will be some really good "Super Tuscan's" made from the blending as well....
