Petite Sirah

Name of varietal: Petite Sirah

Common synonyms: Durif, Petit Syrah, Petit Sirah, Petite Syrah (and other combinations thereof)

Parentage of the grape: Peloursin and Syrah from Rhone, France

History of the grape: Petite Syrah is often confused with its parent grape, Syrah, but it has been identified as a separate descendant. It was developed in the 1870s by a French horticulturalist, Francois Durif, who crossed Peloursin and Syrah in attempts to create a hybrid that was resistant to the powdery mildew (Oidium) epidemic. But it failed to meet quality standards and was still susceptible to bunch rot so it never quite caught on except as a blending grape. In the 1880s, California wine-maker Charles Melver planted it in his Mission San José vineyard and is credited as being the first to change its name from Durif to Petite Syrah. From there, the grape gained local popularity, particularly in the 1940s when efforts were made to produce wines with bolder flavor Read more »

Petite Sirah on Snooth

  • The holidays are around the corner. If you haven’t bought your ... ... ... combines a bit of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Malbec and Merlot with Cabernet. It's a Meritage-ish blend that works. There is plenty of bold fruit here in a silky style that is wonderfully fresh and yet has the depth and spice of a bigger wine. Break this out for your crowd of... Read More

  • Building a cellar isn’t always about laying down the most expensive wines ... ... shadow. While most Petite Sirahs lack some elegance, they make up for it with bold, gutsy fruit. With age, the wines gain an expansive softness that really shows how cellaring can enhance the texture of a wine. Never the most complex wine, aged Petit Sirah noneth... Read More

  • Kumbaya Blend California 2014

    Snoothrank:

Ruby red coloration with rusty purple hues around the rim when held against light and shows nice legs too! Semi clear transparency which suggests some decanting could be done to this one. Aromas of sweet vanilla, dark cherry, blackberry and chokecherry deepness....perhaps some mild peppery spice and oak dryness. Flavors are very fruit forward... Read More

  • Ridge Geyserville 2013

    Snoothrank:

Three years after my previous notes on this wine, I'm still liking it. As noted before, a light hit of red fruit--raspberry--but with no sweetness. Acid is apparent. As previously reported, tannin is somewhat sedate. I'm still calling this a medium-bodied wine, but contrary to my previous assessment, I am of the impression that more years of ... Read More

  • Carol Shelton Karma Reserve 2015

    Snoothrank:

Very nice opening of black raspberry. Then some salinity. Very obvious acid, and fairly sturdy tannin, More a "rustic" wine as opposed to a "refined" one--exactly what a Zinfandel-based wine should be. Read More

  • Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

I'm going to be a bit kinder to this wine than I was a year and a half ago. I am still getting bright red fruit--raspberry, plum, and I am still surprised at the relative lack of tannin. However, it has rounded out to a nice, mouth-filling wine. I am wondering if this is a stylistic change at the winery. Read More
