Montepulciano

Name of varietal: Montepulciano

Common synonyms: Cordisco, Cordiscio, Cordisio, Morellone, Primaticcio, Primutico

Parentage of the grape: indigneous to Abruzzo, Italy

History of the grape: Let’s first clear up some confusion: Montepulciano is a grape. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a wine made from the grape, in the region of Abruzzo. Montepulciano is also a village in Tuscany, that happens to be nowhere near where the grape is grown. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the name of a wine that has absolutely no Montepulciano in it (it’s Prugnolo Gentile, the local name for Sangiovese). So why is a grape named for a village so far away from where it’s actually grown? No one knows.

What we do know is that Montepulciano, the grape, can be traced back to the region for centuries, with written history in 1793 making reference to it in the Abruzzo village of Sulmona. It had been commercially for at least 200 years before finally becoming the DOC Montepulciano d’Abruzzo in Read more »

  • La Valentina Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2002

    Snoothrank:

Nose of cherry cough syrup, plum, cedar and cigar box. Flavor of plum and tobacco. Acidity not yet integrated, but this also helps make this an outstanding food wine when coupled with beef and/or tomato-based dishes; it actually improves the taste of your food. Drunk by itself the wine is not as pleasurable. [89] Read More

  • La Valentina Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2002

    Snoothrank:

Still drinking exceptionally well. Enjoyed with dinner of Szechuan Green Beans, Chow Fun and London Broil. It married perfectly. It is unusual to find a wine that tastes great with spicy food, but this one does. I feel this wine is especially suited to accompanying food. [89] Read More

  • La Valentina Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2002

    Snoothrank:

Enjoyed 2 bottles with friends to accompany a "Beef Barolo" Italian dinner. The wine is in a really good place right now. It proved to be an outstanding accompaniment to the main dish which was basically a beef roast braised in a full bottle of Barolo wine. [90] Read More

  • Tato Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2000

    Snoothrank:

First day very harsh with stong "petroleum" notes. Smoother next day. Originally gave a 75 because this should be an "every day" wine and should be accessible right away, but since it improved quite a bit the second day, I went ahead and changed my score to 79 based on its $7.99 price and agreeable flavor on day 2.
