Mondeuse (aka. Refosco, Gros Syrah)

This characterful red grape grown in France’s alpine Savoie region is known as Refosco in hills of northern Italy. In both regions, given proper vineyard selection, the vine yields grapes that can produce concentrated red wines with high tannin levels and acidity. Alternatively known as Gros Syrah in France, though it is not related to Syrah (Shiraz) or Petite Sirah (Durif). Adding to the confusion, it was recently revealed by U.C Davis' Carole Meredith that the Petite Sirah vines grown in California were not only Durif, but also Mondeuse amongst other varietals. Mondeuse's acreage in North America is minor, most of which is in California, often planted by Cal-Ital wineries such as Montevina, who prefers to label it under its Refosco moniker. A few acres can also be found in Southern Oregon.

I bought this bottle of wine for 5 euros on my last visit to Calais. The Savoie ... ... are a few reds. The red mondeuse grape is native to Savoy and some beleive it is related to syrah. I started my bottle last night with my chicken stew. There is some blackberry and blackcurrant style fruit with soft tanins although there is not a lot in the ... Read More

  • Thanks for that Mark. Easy to drink wines that have little complexity seems to ... reportedly has a splash of Mondeuse in it that hit the spot. It had a tannic bite on the finish that added interest. Read More

Have had earlier vintages of this ...  When a good bottle of Mondeuse from Gonin or an Altesse from Peillot comes our way, there is a sense of excitement here at Chambers Street Wines. • It's vintage dependent. I really liked the 2012 Syrah, somewhat more than ... than the 2013. Same with the Mondeuse. But I don't know if it's the additional time or the vintages. I love that she's doing those and isn't replanting with Cab, which is what I'd probably do. But in the end there's also a deliciousness factor that we have to include... Read More

  • I like her Tribidrag much more. The Mondeuse was something I really wanted to like and I wished I liked it more. It was fairly one-dimensional and tannic. In a way kind of like a Petite Sirah can be - big and tannic and kind of impenetrable without a lot of layers, at least none that were immediately discernable. Kind of bitter too. I left it de... • D - it's the VV. I haven't had either for years. Just from memory, they ... Dolcetto or more recently a Mondeuse. Other grapes and blends can be one note wonders but when I find something dense and tannic, with a single dominant but vague fruit element and an astringent quality, I mentally place it in that category. And to be sure, that does no... Read More
