The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Used for both blending and as a varietal, this grape originates from France’s Bordeaux region, and is a primary grape in Bordeaux wine.

Two thirds of the world’s total planted Merlot grapes are grown in France. After that, it is Italy’s 5th most planted grape. Merlot surged to popularity in the United States in the 1990s.

Merlot on Snooth

  • C. C. Jentsch the Chase 2015

    Snoothrank:

The Chase, which is mostly Merlot, Cab Franc and Cab Sauvignon with some lesser varieties such as Petit Verdot thrown in, is a deep, dark wine of considerable density and extraction for the region. The nose has Kirsch, sweet plum, and raspberry - depending on sniff; entry is viscous, luscious and just off-dry, with almond, vanilla and cassis do... Read More

  • Chateau Saint-Seurin Haut-Medoc 1997

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine for £7 from the website www.cellartrade.co.uk. • Sterling Vineyards Merlot Napa Valley 2002

    Snoothrank:

Another estate sale find. While storage of this wine was less than optimal--room temperature environment--I am perfectly happy with it. Jammy red berry fruit on entry. Some earthiness, mid-palate. A bit of "old tannin funk" on the rear palate. Read More

  • Beaulieu Vineyard Merlot Rutherford Maestro Collection 2002

    Snoothrank:

Lots of upfront jammy red fruit. Also noticeable "smokiness." Clearly, some oxidation, and that may be the smoky thing I'm getting. Still some tannin. I doubt this was ever more than an adequate wine. However, I am OK with it--especially, considering the sketchy storage provenance of this wine. Read More

  • Chateau Deyrem Valentin 2016

    Snoothrank:

Deepest red in the glass. Nose of cedar wood, sweet cherry and currant. Clean and pure like the finest fruit. Slight edge to the tannin with a promise of long life in the bottle. Good red fruit with some licorice and cake spice mid-palate. More suave, fleshy and aromatic red fruit such as cherry - even raspberry - on the back palate and fini... Read More
