Lagrein

Common synonyms: Lagarino, Lagrain, Lagrein Kretzer

Parentage of the grape: Teroldego crossed with Schiava gentile

History of the grape: First mentioned in the 17th century in the records of the Muri Benedictine monastery, this variety may hail from the Lagarina valley in Trentino. DNA profiling proved in 2004 that Lagrein is the product of a cross between Schiava Gentile and Teroldego. This grape variety is frequently added in small quantities to lighter, softer varieties such as Pinot Nero and Schiava. In such a role, it contributes acidity, color, and tannin. Lagrein is extremely productive, but when not overcropped, it can make truly formidable wines.

In 1988, Peter May of Melbourne University brought Lagrein to Australia. Small quantities of the variety are planted in the United States as well.

Characteristics of the grape: deep in color, firmly tannic, with good acidity and flavors of chocolate, herb, and plum. Can have a bitter finish.

Lagrein on Snooth

  • Haven't opened them because I'm waiting for some event where there will ... other wines like that - e.g. Lagrein from NY and Blaufrankish from Michigan. My hunch is that they'll guess the Checkmate as Chablis or a CA Chardonnay made in that style. The other I don't know.BTW, don't know if any of you have been reading about the surplus of grapes... • So on a whim we decided to visit British Columbia. But we flew up to Washington, so visited a few places there too. Totally off the subject of wine, I found an awesome bakery in Spokane and the girl there served me this thing that I thought was a kind of Parmesan cheese foam. In fact it was fermented cashew whip, which was definitely weird, but ... Read More

  • Somebody go pull Foxall's chain.  I found one of his "weird ... ... Italian grape" wines--Lagrein. This is a totally fun wine.  BIG.  MOUTH-FILLING.  Some blackberries and a significant dose of mineral or tar.  As much tannin as I can recall from an old world wine.  I can report that it pairs well with Manchego cheese.  Not a great wine, but, ... • Kupelwieser Lagrein Intenditore Alto Adige 2017

    Snoothrank:

Inky dark maroon color. Musty nose. Whoa, this one will smack you around, a bit. Just the slightest suggestion of black or blue berries, and, then, Its just tons of minerally, stoney, soily sensations. Ive long laughed a people who insist they want to taste the terroir in a wine. You want to taste the dirt? This is your wine. After just a... Read More
