Grand Noir

Grand Noir de la Calmette or Grand Noir is a red grape created in 1855 by French grape breeder Henri Bouschet at his vineyard.  It is a tienturier or red flesh grape named after crossing Petit Bouschet and Aramon noir at the breeding station Domaine de la Calmette vineyard near Montpellier.  Petit Bouschet was created by Henri's father Louis Bouschet crossing Aranon and Teinturier du Cher.

Grand Noir was once widely grown in France in the Cognac and Languedoc regions.  Today it is rarely planted there..  The variety is predominately found in Spanish wine regions of Galacia in northwest Spain and in the southern Portuguese regions of Alentejo.

The Grand Noir de la Calmette grape does exist in California.  There are two small plots at Dommen Ranch vineyard in Windsor, CA in the Russian River Valley AVA planted circa 1930s.  In 2011 Carlisle Winery made 192 cases of a 90% Grand Noir from this vineyard that included 10% Zinfandel Read more »

  • Once our Christmas activities at my in-laws were over (around 5 PM), we headed back home and elected to go on a walk.  We needed to deliver a bottle of wine to our favorite neighbors, the ones that we share wine dinners with periodically throughout the year with.  They had left this 2014 California Pinot Noir at our door on Christmas Eve, so it ...
