History of the grape: Cinsau(l)t has been growing in Southern France for centuries. In the Rhone and Languedoc regions its primary function is as a supporting player in blends, especially Chateauneuf-du-Pape, adding spice and aromatics, mellowing out harsh tannins. It is also planted widely in countries with sizeable French influence in their wine-making such as Lebanon, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. It came to the states in the mid-1800s.

But perhaps its most important role in wine history took place in South Africa, where in 1925 it was crossed with Pinot Noir by Stellenbosch University Professor A.I. Perold in an attempt to create a unique South African varietal, which became Pinotage

Cinsault on Snooth

  • La Condamine Paulignan Minervois 2015

    Snoothrank:

The opaque, deep cherry red wine exudes a perfume of Mediterranean brush (garigue), and spicy, peppery plum. The entry is slightly rustic with white pepper, black cherry, plum and leather predominating. This panoply of flavour lingers only on the back palate for a satisfying finish. Great value from southern France. 89. Read More

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in Oxfordshire ... of a blend of grenache and cinsault though I do not know in what proportions.I started it last night with my supper of baked salmon with salad. • Boekenhoutskloof the Chocolate Block 2017

    Snoothrank:

The Boekenhoutskloof Chocolate Block presents well in the glass - quite opaque red. On the nose, there is a hint of white pepper, pomegranate, and lots of sweet cherry and (perhaps) raspberry. Entry is rewarding with a hint of pepper and a burst of cherry cola and dark chocolate. Finish is long and satisfying with some vanilla and residual ta... Read More

  • Château Mont Thabor Côtes du Rhône 2015

    Snoothrank:

Attractive garnet color with a lot of light coming through in the glass. Modest level of tart red cherry flavor on the tip of the tongue. Some dustiness--might be tannin which is fairly slight. An uncomplicated but enjoyable wine. Read More
