Spam up the gazoo!

Posted by Really Big Al, Sep 29, 2016.

It looks like several hundred Chinese spam bots hit the site overnight.  I deleted a bunch but there are so many of them.  I wonder why they bother doing this to sites?

I think I deleted over a hundred spam posts this morning.  Good thing I'm retired and can waste time doing things of this nature.

That was a major jam...I know a few of us made some efforts to clear pages worth of the stuff, but it was a flood that couldn't be dealt with using the approve/deny function. Wonder how Snooth ultimately got it all gone, well it's good that they did.

I whacked a dozen or two yesterday but this last onslaught was crazy.  What do people gain from doing this?

I bet it was a Chinese sweat shop practicing or perhaps some of Putin's bot army seeking to throw the blame upon others.  Looks like we got it done with Snooth forum members.

Those aren't from individuals though, are they? Seems like they just automate things and flood the internet. If they had a few hundred places doing that, maybe they could cause major traffic jams or worse.

I want to thank you guys for your diligent work.  I mean that - because by the time I get on I see very little and as I understand it you have to have 'moderator" status to do this - so again - thank you all.

As I've mentioned before, because of time zone factors I'm usually first to see spam, and have cleared far more than I care to think of. The most egregious up to now has been from India, but that's been, say, six posts at a time from different IDs. When I first saw what happened last night there were 3 screens worth. WTF factor kicked in, I cleared a couple screens worth then PM'd Snooth's CEO. Had dinner, came back later, and the spambots had populated *more than* two dozen screens, and still climbing. That's where I stopped counting so who knows how high the count reached.

Chinese hacks are obviously at a different level. Don't know if the operator just set things wrong and didn't care, or this was an attempt to make some kind of point. Do know that this kind of thing can become in effect a denial of service attack on any Forum.  Glad to see that Snooth cleared them all out but this points to a clear vulnerability. Just happy that so far we don't have to fill in Captcha boxes before posting.

Oh, and with this level of attack now happening, remember DO NOT click on any links that may appear in the spam posts...

No - I thought I couldn't deny and crown spam where it should be - I deleted at least a dozen tonight.

Wow, that is incredible to see. You guys did an amazing job cleaning up the mess. Here are some stats and info about the "attack".

  • 27 user accounts
  • 1050 forum posts, seemingly spamming information from a database of universities in the US and around the world
  • incredibly diverse IP addresses from the US, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, etc (meaning they used some kind of proxy)

My best guess is that this is some kind of SEO spam, just like the rest of it usually is. If you can get a few links posted on thousands of websites by spamming their user generated content sections, you may trick some of the search engines for a while and get some real traffic, serve some ad network ads against it, and make some money. Google and the other search engines are constantly trying to fight spam, but as long as there's even a little money in it, we're stuck with it.

Google supposedly keeps revising practices to prevent such gaming, but it's an ongoing battle.

What can be done here, Mark? Us having to clean this much stuff up manually with the approve/disapprove button is a real pain. In the meantime I'm sure genuine traffic is being limited because anyone who tunes into the Forum and sees that quickly moves on.

P.S. Just manually cleared two more screenfulls since last posting this. Any other remedies, Mark??

They hit us again, like a bunch of children.  ZHOUJI22 is the last one.

We need some better structural remedy. The Forum cannot work if this level of spambotting continues indefinitely.

This is ongoing, not just a one-or-two-off. Just had to clear another three screens (at 20 posts a screen) of spambot guano. I have never been a member of any forum for any type of subject where spamming is this bad, nor where admins allow things to go on so long.

Mark A. needs to weigh in with some solutions from the Snooth side.

Something else weird - and I hope it's not because of this.  You know those little numbers by the pictures we provide - Mine reduced dramatically tonight and just because I was curious I checked that wine rack area and some of the things that were there in the trophies section are missing now also.

I hope this is glitch and not something more sinister.
