Notes on a New Zealand syrah

Posted by GregT, Nov 10, 2008.

I was rooting around in the cellar looking for something a bit different from the usual suspects, and came across a bottle I'd forgotten about.

Matariki Hawkes Bay 2001 Syrah - Fairly reductive nose with plenty of funk on opening the bottle. In a few minutes it blew off, but never entirely. I didn't count it as a flaw, just something I hadn't expected because I couldn't remember that aromatic a nose when the wine was young. On the palate, it was a bit leathery, with some tart blackberry/cherry as well as an almost sweet note that was accented by pepper/spice, particularly toward the end. Certainly no fruit bomb. On the other hand, it was a bit riper and far more interesting than many of the reds I've had from New Zealand.

A pretty good wine that seems to be maturing fairly quickly. Not dissimilar from a syrah-based Cote du Rhone in overall weight and feel. Not too expensive either. My guess is that if you like "old-world" wines, you'll like this one.

Hey Greg,

Good tasting note.  I had a Hawkes Bay Syrah about five years ago now.  I can't remember anything about it, other than it wasn't cheap, but it was satisfying.

I thought you might get a chuckle out of my dumpster dive ;)

We'll be cruising around New Zealand this coming February and we have a tour of the wineries of Hawkes Bay on 11 Feb 2020.  I shall look for a Syrah while there.  We will also visit Villa Maria (Remember the virtual tasting earlier this year?) and the West Brook wineries on 05 Feb 2020.  This should be a lovely trip as we have not yet toured New Zealand.

I definitely plan to post some pictures during the trip on my wine forum, and I will build a web page that covers the whole trip like I did with our July 2019 cruise from Venice to Athens.  I shall try to remember to post that new web page here on Snooth too.

Too bad I will be having some dental surgery at that time.  NZ wineries are certainly on the agenda, and I might have joined just such an expedition had other events not unceremoniously intervened.  But teeth are a bit more important just now.  Enjoy your trip.

Z.
