New World Pinot Noir recommendation?

Original post by esol, Aug 9, 2016.

I typically shy away from Pinot Noir, preferring more full bodied, dark & dense varieties.

But I have had a couple Pinot's that knocked my socks off. In each case, these were made New World style with very concentrated extraction resulting in a fruity palette and dense mouth feel. But I don't recall what wines/vintages were like this.

Would love to get some recommendations.

We'll be in touch. I'm out of town a lot for the next six weeks so it will be kind of hard - probably some time in the fall. He's between us geographically.

Just a quick update on my quest. I'm not a big fan of Pinot Noir, but occasionally have found one that I really liked. So I asked for advice in this thread, based on the style I tend to like, and bought a variety of Pinots to try out.

I haven't tried all of them yet, but most of them (full list is in a previous message). Most of them, to me, have been pretty typical of my Pinot reaction- just OK but not exciting.

But I finally opened one tonight that *is* what I was looking for. The 2014 HAHN SLH. Its fruit forward, silky mouth feel, bright acid, well integrated oak, a touch of dust/chalk. Basically "yummy".

Burg vs Bordeaux,  food always defines the winner.

Glad you liked the HAHN.  Your thoughts echo mine more or less...and thanks for coming back.  I keep those kind of wines in my cellar just for those easy drinking, no thinking kind of nights.

Well, you might look for this one:

Good to hear. Now that we know that, I thought I'd share a low cost Pinot that surprised me recently, also grown in Monterey I believe.

Echo JD's thoughts for wines of that style - also add the 2013 Melleville's to that list - wonderful for under $30.
