Garagiste - Worth a chance?

Posted by Lucha Vino, Nov 16, 2012.

What do you think?  Is this worth $38?  How was 1989 as a vintage in Bordeaux?

The latest "Best Wine Ever" from JR...

An original cache of 1989 Left Bank Bordeaux (drinking superbly at present) for $38+

That says it all.

...except, I will add, that the 1989 vintage continues to increase in stature with so many wines that were (somewhat) overlooked in favor of the early flash of their 1990 counterparts. Anyone that has tasted 1989 Montrose, Haut Brion, La Mission or Palmer lately will continue a semi-secretive search to stash as many 1989’s as they can fortuitously find.

From a blend of 60-70% Cabernet Sauvignon with the remainder Merlot and 5-8% Petit Verdot, this plot in Moulis has been farmed by the same family for over 100 years (now close to 150 years). Their wine can be traditional and four-square in youth but it can also age in a most splendid fashion - especially after 20 years. The 1989 proves you need to have patience for classic Bordeaux to unwind and (sitting here sniffing and tasting what’s in my stem) it gives us all the evidence required.

An absolute joy to drink now (and over the next few years), the 1989 Bel-Air Lagrave is an unexpected treat that is still priced within reason. Compared to the top wines from the year, I have to put this up there as one or the highlight bargains of the vintage. If you take into account the fact that hardly any original 1989 Chateau material can still be had in the $30’s (from all across Bordeaux), this wine is in a class of very few.

Community Notes (this is another instance where there’s only one note but the TN is so on-point, I’ve included it):

This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with the finest provenance available.

ONE SHIPMENT ONLY (as far as I know, this is the last of the 1989).

FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to 12/person until we run out:

1989 Chateau Bel-Air Lagrave Cru Bourgeois (Moulis/Bordeaux) - $38.92
(this is not the generic $20 “Bel Air Lagrave”, this is the Chateau grand vin/Cru Bourgeois – compare at $45-60+)

No way, don't do it!

Have you heard of Full Pull? It's similar to Garagiste but better and they're based out of and specialize in WA wine.

Oh Yeah.  I have plenty of wines from Full Pull in my cellar!!

Luca - it was the best vintage in Bordeaux until 1990!

More seriously, as a vintage it is generally considered a very good one. No worries there.

I don't know that particular wine at all. It actually might be worth a look just for curiosity's sake, just based on left bank Ca-based wines from that vintage. It's the kind of thing you really never know with him - it could be an excellent fully mature wine at a ridiculous price that makes you wish you'd bought a case, or some dead, tired, green swill that gets you angry for purchasing a single bottle.

Exactly, just too much risk to make any logical sense. But that's how he gets you, like with mystery wines, mystery cases, and german cellar's. Of course, the german cellar probably takes the cake.

If you're going to talk about the German cellar, link to the

Best vintage in Bordeaux before 1990? Wouldn't that be 1982?

Well now that's a point too! You're correct of course - for the most part 82 was generally considered best of the 80s. But the wine he was talking about was an 89, and the 89s aren't generally considered all that bad, especially some of the Right Bank wines (which this isn't).

Have also heard 83' is nothing to sneeze at...the 83' Margaux is supposed to be one of those bucket list wines but I've heard a lot of them are off bottles.
