Flogging a Dead Horse?

Posted by zufrieden, Nov 7.

I am noticing early on in my return (a revenant of sorts, I suppose) that not much is being elicited by planting a few dozen remarks here and there on the forum.  I hope I am not breaking a moral code by flogging a truly dead horse...  but if not, some opinion might be in order by those of us left behind.

Lindemen still here, sort of.  I can't find my posts on the main forum page(s) other than going into my own profile to review them there.    My posts used to appear on the first, or second, page of postings depending how many other posts were submitted by others-  I could read, or interact, from that point.

Not active with Snooth enough to complain real hard,  but seems to be a forum with a lot of potential that's short on managing potential.

Let's see if this posts goes in response to your Dead Horse post.  Cheers Snoothers.

Hey, it seemed to work.  Anyone know what happened to my thread of posts containing answers from other Snoothers?  I was thinking maybe the higher-up Snooth suits thought my account name suggested a spam account, or advertising account and cast it aside.

I can't answer your question just yet, but I have been able to find many responses I made over the last ten years.  I doubt they (your threads) are gone altogether, but you could see if anyone is in there vis-a-vis the "site feedback" category ... although I'm betting you've already tried this rather straight-forward attempt at a solution.

Lindeman, is this the thread you are having difficulty finding?

http://www.snooth.com/talk/topic/hello-snooth-595/

Yes, Snooth changed it's business model years ago and just let the Forum fade away.  Many insisted that Snooth itself would die, but they seem to be carrying on without most of the group that used to hang around at the Forum.

There was a spate of really obnoxious spam that drove most of the regulars away, but it appears that Snooth decided to take action to alleviate that.

There are just a handful of us who still post semi-regularly here.  Maybe it will come back.  Maybe not.

Hmm.  It appears that the above link does not work.  However, if you just copy it and paste it into the address bar of your browser, it should work.  If you have difficulty, post here, and I'll explain how I found it.

ZUFRIEDEN:  Just saw 'site feedback', never really zeroed in on it before.  Usually I just clicked on my user name and worked off of the 12 item drop down there- beginning with 'profile' and ending with 'log out', inclusive.  So, never got very far finding my thread.

EMARK:  Thanks, it showed up on my end when I clicked on your link, did not have to copy/paste in a new tab.      How did you find it?  I wonder if I ask a question on my thread if it will appear on the first page after posting which will make it easier tor me to track and interact instead of playing hide-and-go-seek with the thread...lol.  Anyway, looks like Snooth is showing signs of life and ridding the spamo stuff will help getting things back on track- which seemed pretty lively when I first joined.

Cheers guys...check back in later.  LM

I'm betting that, if we can keep up the chatter that Lemur and Greco-Roman avatar will return... I rather think that conversation (the Forum) is crucial due to the association of wine and drink with general conviviality.  I really used to enjoy the sophistication of many of the contributors - not just on wine but any topic you might bring to mind.  Well, I will do my best ot lure a few wayward ones back.

Yes it would be great to have those posters back. Greg is very knowledgeable in general and Luchador is a Washinton state specialist so that is helpfull too. I'm surprised we haven't heard from OT and JD lately.

The link that EMark posted worked for me.  I for one got tired of the daily spam issue and started a new wine forum.  I've pretty much stayed away from Snooth but now that the spam is gone (for now anyway), I might pop in now and then.  Several of us from the other wine forum dialed into the Snooth virtual "Golden Bordeaux" tasting last night but audio issues clouded the event.  We found that the audio was not working on PCs but it did work on iPhones, so we needed two devices to participate.

Yes, the spam is annoying, but is part of the scenery in the modern, money-is-everything, entitlement world. I fight it, but accept it.  If the site actually makes a (social) comeback, you can expect more spam.  That's certain - unless the treatment of sign-ups changes, and that might be problematic.

Also, in reference to other blogs which were set up, there are several by "former" members of this community. So, RBA, you can always point out the URL for your blog; who knows? - I may visit it - if invited to do so, of course.  The reason why I have not participated much in the newer sites is that it is hard work keeping apace of them all and, after all, this is something we probably do for fun.

Anyway, if you send a link, I promise to take a peek - assuming, as I just said but repeat once again, you invite me to do so.

BTW, I noticed my forum post count is down by 200 from yesterday.  Magic? Gremlins?

:-)

No Idea about the post count. Mine stayed at 0 for a long time and has just recently started to grow again. I hoped that that issue was fixed along with the spam but from what your saying, maybe not.

Zufrieden, my Wine Lovers Forum is an invitation only forum, so we have no issue with spam,  On top of that, I am the administrator and I am active in the maintenance of the forum software.  It's hosted on my domain that I've had for perhaps a dozen years - I started it for posting motorcycle stuff and computer stuff.  I still do those things in retirement, but I'm more interested in fine wines and things of that nature.

Here is the link to the wine forum:  https://www.bigal-computers.net/vanilla/discussions

I'm not sure how much you can see without signing in, and as I said, you cannot sign in without getting an invitation.  If you would like to join, send me your email address in a private message on this Snooth forum, and I'll send you a link that you follow to create your username and password.  You can upload your own avatar and the image sizes for photos is 2 MB.  Most photos taken with modern cell phones and cameras need to be resized to get under the 2 MB limit.

I'll look for your PM here over the next few days.

Invitation accepted.  I like the design of your site and would encourage others to join with a serious interest in serious topics.

This site still seems comatose... perhaps voting with one's "fingers" (to borrow on a phrase) is a clue to the mass exodus.  However, I will check in from time to time and try to rustle up a little action.

Actually, Z, I think your efforts have pumped some air into this balloon.  The Snooth Forum did not crash in one day.  It had been circling the drain for quite some time.  The spam bots did drive a stake through its heart,  It appears that Snooth has deflected the spam bots.  It's going to take a while before the Forum really comes back to life.

Yes, there seems to be a little lift.  It seems strange that the site abandoned these discussion groups to their own devices entirely given that lively chat can mean more involvement on other (admittedly commercial) areas of the site.  But no matter, we'll see if we can resurrect the dead and resuscitate those dying on the vine, if I may be allowed a small play on words.

Some have returned for a peek or two at infrequent intervals...

Do you think they've deflected the spam? If so, that would be great.

Any idea what they're doing to drive visits?

Don't think they're doing anything big.  Haven't seen any links to them at other wine sites, google as a sponsor or others.

And it's good seeing Greg around a little bit. more also.
