Finger food that pairs with Bordeaux wines

Posted by suzy4of9, Oct 9, 2013.

Having a Bordeaux wine tasting this weekend. Any suggestion for some fun and tasty small plate dishes or finger foods that can be served?

Well, Suzy, you can't hardly go wrong with cheese.  Maybe not the most imaginative idea, but I don't think I've ever had a wine that did not taste better with cheese.  Of course that may defeat the purpose of having a tasting.  With French wine I would look at French cheeses, but no blue-veined cheese (unless your tasting of Bordeaux wine includes Sauternes in which case you absolutely must have blue-veined cheese).

How about meat skewers?  I would think that lamb, beef, or duck should be good.

What is finger food? Why not what you would make under different circumstances?

For example, fresh sausage. Just cut it up into small pieces that people can eat with toothpicks and cook it like that. Lamb sausage would be good and/or something with herbs in it.

Same with grilled vegetables - get some char on them and they can work very nicely.

Meat skewers is a good idea, but even easier would be cutting the meat into bite-size chunks and broiling like that. Cold meats are good too - roast beef from yesterday, or roast lamb or pork or chicken.

Some cheeses - hard cheeses generally work better with red wines than soft cheeses do, so I'd go with those. And while French cheese would be nice, since so much Bordeaux was consumed in England, you could go with some aged Cheddar, which is quite wonderful with Bordeaux.

And anything with mushrooms and herbs, like stuffed mushroom caps.

Good luck and have a good time.

I finally thought of an answer to Gregt's question:  what is finger food?

Pig's knuckles.

Just kidding, Suzy.  I hope your event is fun.  Please come back to us afterward and tell us about it.  We are curious about both the wines that you tasted and the food that was offered.
