Willamette Valley Wine

The Willlamette Valley region in Oregon has a wine-making history that dates back to the 1850s. Early immigrant settlers began dabbling in wine-making, and their enterprises eventually won some local acclaim and attracted other vintners to follow suit, with a fair amount of success into the 20th century.

However, the Prohibition forced most wineries to shut down and pursue other business. In the era following Repeal, wine production was mostly from “Farmer’s Wineries,” who were government-licensed to produce fruit-based (berries, Concord grapes, etc.) wines. Though others attempted wines from Vitis vinifera grapes, they did so with little success.

But in the 1960s, a group of California oenologists from University of California at Davis became interested in Oregon as a potential up and coming region. They were particularly intrigued by the Willamette Valley for its climate and terroir, even though temperature studies at UC Davis found the region Read more »

Willamette Valley on Snooth

  • DV, yes we did, here's the write up, thanks again for the Meyer Pinot. We had a grand time tasting through these four pinots the other night! Consensus was fairly unanimous - the Chambolle-Musigny and the Patricia Green (Willamette) tied for first with the Okanagan Valley coming in a close third and the lowly Chilean an obvious last place finishe... • Domaine Drouhin Oregon Arthur 2015

    Snoothrank:

Somewhat more spring water on the palate, with cake spice and vanilla - with a bit thinner backbone than the 2016 at this point (April 2019), but alive; with a sweet sugary vanilla nose, and spiritus flavour dominating entry. A fine wine - if you want spice, spring water purity. 91. Read More

  • Domaine Drouhin Oregon Arthur Chardonnay Dundee Hills 2016

    Snoothrank:

. Light golden colour. Nose of spiced apple and pear. Fresh snow and vanilla extract. Entry is smooth, and very Beaune (certainly Bourgogne) in character with a hint of almond bitterness atop a rather neutral apple. Very pure. Finish is a good solid medium - commendable for a Chardonnay. 91-92 Read More

  • Domaine Drouhin Oregon Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2015

    Snoothrank:

This wine has an excellent nose; there are aromatics of Creamsicle (yes, I am serious) , earth and strawberry confit. Colour is quite deep; the core is quite deep cherry red indicative of good extraction; the rim is only showing pink at this early stage. Entry is quite round and full, with a hint of tannin on the finish, which is medium to long ... Read More

  • Argyle Pinot Noir Reserve Willamette Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Just tried the 2015 Argyle Reserve PN, and for lovers of Nuits-Saint-Georges, this is the wine for you... at 1/3 the price. A beautiful, nuanced vanilla-strawberry nose invites you to raise your glass, and of course you do: a soft, silky, slightly bracing entry with fresh, cultivated strawberry caresses the palate. The finesse is quite extraordi... Read More

  • Sokol Blosser Dundee Hills Estate Pinot Noir 2015

    Snoothrank:

The 2015 Sokol Blosser is its usual reliable self; namely, a wine with deep cherry-red translucence, an inviting nose of strawberry, vanilla and wet earth, with an entry of rich, sweet, luscious strawberry and a hint of leather. Smooth, harmonious and deep, this wine finishes long and warm. Superior to most any French Burgundy at this price p... Read More

  • Stoller Vineyards Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2016

    Snoothrank:

Translucent Garnet in color with touch of blue around the rim.Ripe cherries on the nose. Sour cherries upon entry that become more raspberry mid palate that streches to the lightly drying finish. Read More

  • Northwest Wine Company Pinot Noir Kudos Single Vineyard Zena Crown Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Nice, light to medium bodied Oregon pinot noir. Decent acidity, good black cherry, rhubarb, dark plum and dried prune overtones with a fairly long finish. Good but not great in that there aren't a lot of layers, just a straight forward dark fruit front end. Read More
