for this region?

San Luis Obispo is part of the larger wine Central Coast region of California, located at the halfway point between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Spanish missionaries began wine-making here over two centuries ago for ceremonial wines made from the Mission (a.k.a. Pais) grape.

The area has two microclimates. Cooler conditions in the north are ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay production, while the warmer south cultivates Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.
There are four subregions within San Luis Obispo:
Arroyo Grande Valley
Edna Valley
Paso Robles
York Mountain

  • Epoch Estate Wines Zinfandel Paderewski Vineyard 2014

    Snoothrank:

Very dark ruby color. Rustic, somewhat barnyard nose; Blackberry on entry--somewhat jammy but not over the top. Then I get a chocolate thing. Slightly tannic, but nothing out of the ordinary.Very enjoyable wine. Read More

  • Epoch Estate Wines White 2018

    Snoothrank:

47% Grenache Blanc, 42% Viognier, 11% Roussanne -- Beautiful, straw color in the glass. Viognier is immediately recognizable on the nose--honeysuckle, apricot. Again, Viognier fruitiness is apparent on the tongue--peach, table grapes, and the almost-gewurztraminer spiciness. However, this wine is loaded with acid--from the other grapes, I wou... Read More

  • Turley Zinfandel Paso Robles Pesenti Vineyard 2014

    Snoothrank:

Lots if dried fruit at the front of this one--think prunes and raisins. With that description you should think that this is a big, rich wine. It is. It also seems hot. It doesn't suck, but all in all, it just seems to be an unintegrated wine with no subtly. Read More

  • Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas Rouge Paso Robles 2015

    Snoothrank:

Translucent ruby in color. Dark fruit with a tad of mint on the nose. It gives a dark cherry fruit in the mouth with a little tartness and a earthy bitterness on the finish. Does it have garrique? No but there is that earthiness on the finish that hints at herbs. Read More
