Vinho Verde Wine

This region in northern Portugal is known for its dry, refreshing, low alcohol and lightly spritzy wines that are consumed very young, a.k.a. “green wine.” It lies north of the Port region, bordering Spain’s Galicia, along the Atlantic Coast (another reason for its name, this is sometimes known as the Costa Verde, or “Green Coast”). The soils there are mostly granite and slate, with the majority of the vineyards grown in granite. This is the mirror opposite of the nearby Douro where slate is preferred over granite.

Most of the best wines are made from Alvarinho, the same as Spain’s Albariño. However, there are many other indigenous grapes that are also used, including Loueiro, Trajadura, Azal and Pederna.

  • Last night we had a Spanish wine night (With the exception of a Vinho Verde opener.)The verde I mentioned - light, a little effervescence, peach, citrus, melon - just what it should be.The Tarima Monastrell was next.  For a $9 bottle of wine this really packed a bang.  After the butterscotch  blew off it really shined.Next was 2008 Vina Ardanza ... • It's an inexpensive one and only applies to UKers, but Sainsbury's Vinho Verde is amazing and a steal at only £3.70. Light, pleasant, off dry, but not too sweet.
