Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Vignobles Jerome Quiot Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Lieu-Dit les Combes d'Arnevel 2015

    Snoothrank:

Considerable lime, white table grape and gooseberry on the nose with a slight golden hue in the glass. Entry is smooth and balanced - with acidic gooseberry elements, citrus (lime) and quince (or perhaps apple-pear). This is fine white wine with elegance - one you could drink all afternoon on the patio for a great price. 90. Read More

  • Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine Tavel Rose 2016

    Snoothrank:

The Lafond Roc-Epine 2016 is just what one expects of a Tavel; namely, a much deeper colour reminiscent of cranberry juice (perhaps a bit lighter), with a prominent scent of sour strawberry and roses. Entry is quite powerful for a rose; there is a stem-like almond bitterness on the finish with more unripe strawberry. Very rich. For a Tavel at th... Read More

  • Zuf - Don't know that I agree with that.  The QPR value on Spanish, Southern Rhone, Portugal table wines, Chilean and some Italian are far and away better than Cali entry level wines.  Being from there, albeit temporarily, I learned a hard truth - land values really drive the price.  Old family vineyards, think Buehler, can still make real good ...
