Loire Wine

The Loire River valley is a massively varied viticultural region in northwestern France. Its climate varies from the continental one of its eastern edge to the balmier Pays Nantais, which is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Unlike some other regions, which are dominated by cooperatives, this one is composed mostly of small family farms.

Melon de Bourgogne, the grape of Muscadet, is the main variety planted in the western Loire. These are brisk wines traditionally paired with oysters. The central Loire is the home of subtle and ageworthy reds made from Cabernet Franc and of Chenin Blanc, which makes some of the greatest sweet and dry white wines in the world. The eastern Loire contains Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, both made from Sauvignon Blanc (though red and rose Sancerre is made from Pinot Noir). That, however, is just the beginning. The Loire is the most diverse region in all France.

The Loire is known as the “garden of France” for its bucolic beauty and agricultural variety. Its Read more »

  • Domaine du Viking Vouvray Tendre 1990

Top of cork was covered in black mold which concerned me a bit initially, but after carefully washing and uncorking the wine, I was delighted to find that the mold had not penetrated down the cork. Color was dazzling - a beautiful crystal clear gold. After allowing for a good aeration, nose was candied lemon peel with maybe just a hint of orange... Read More

  • Clos du Tue-Boeuf Cheverny Frileuse 2003

Cloudy with a fair amount of sediment. The wine is pale gold in color. Nose is rustic with wood, lots of deep honey and lemon confit notes. Light and soft in the mouth with a touch of acidity on the finishalon flavors mingle with honey and dusty attic like aromas. I won't say this wine is dead, but it's on it's way out. Not enough acidity to mak... Read More

  • Domaine des Champs Vignons Chinon Vieilles Vignes Cuvée des Chérubins 2003

Deep purpuly red. Nose of strawberry, cranberry, light black pepper and mineral. As it warms aromas of creamy vanilla, but not as if formed by oak. Medium weight with strong acid and light to medium tannins. Rich fruit on the palate with cherry, strawberry, light spice, a nice mineral component while on the finish you get a strong herbal note. A... Read More

  • Theirry Chancelle Saumur 2004

Light yellow with a thin overall look. Pineapple, honey, peach, and little yellow flowers I used to pick as a kid. Big acidity, overall dry with a "I need food" attitude. The pineapple follows to the palate where some lime like citrus and faint nut quality all show. Not bad. alt-3 c4a10t14o5=83 Fruit started to show more as it opened and the aci... Read More
