for this region?

The people of this region once spoke Occitan, in which one said “oc” instead of “oui” to mean “yes,” hence Langue d’Oc. Though known for making low-quality wines in vast quantity, it nevertheless offers a diverse array of grape varieties and wine styles, and many producers have begun to focus on quality in response to international competition from other exporters of very cheap wine.

The climate is Mediterranean. The workhorse grape Carignan is still the most planted here, but this is changing; Syrah, Grenache, Cinsaut, Mourvedre, and a host of international varieties are also common. The Languedoc is best-known for ripe, intense red wines like St-Chinian, Corbieres, and Faugeres, but one can also find crisp white wines made from Picpoul, sparkling wines from the region of Limoux, and an increasing number of dessert wines.

Cult producers like Mas Jullien and Mas Cal Demoura, whose wines command high prices and worldwide acclaim, are located here Read more »

  • Gonzalez-Byass Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Nectar NV

Nuts and spice and everything nice. The nose is a mix of acetone, nuts, salt air, musty cellar and mixed brown spices. Smooth with a hint of sweetness and rich flavors of wood, cinnamon, raw nuts, cooked sugar, salt air and more. Smooth and soft in the mouth I only wish I was sitting down enjoying a sunset on the beach. Truely a great wine. 5/5 ... Read More

  • Château la Roque Red Rhone Blend Coteaux du Languedoc Pic St. Loup Cupa Numismae 2001

Incredible wine, with pure fruit and rich spice. Had it with a lamb ragu and fresh Gnocchi. Raspberry, leather, pepper, and more. Wish I had more in my cellar. [NR] Read More

  • Chardonnay Pinot Noir Anna Codorniu Cava Rosé Brut Spain Cava NV

Light yellow in color with small to medium bubbles. The nose shows some yeasty notes with pineapple, though overall pretty hollow. Medium sparkle on the palate with a dry finish. Creamy in the mouth with apple, yeast, and faint honey notes. Though overall this wine is a good value, it's still a bit boring. 3/5 [NR] Read More

  • Les Clos de Paulilles Red Rhone Blend Collioure 2001

Medium to heavey in the mouth with a blackberry syrup quality. Rich depth of flavors with berry, soft vanilla, and light spice present. Oak is present but very well integrated, while the wine as a whole is amazingly balanced. c5a11t16o8=90 [90] Read More

Very nice for the low price point. I am a beginner at describing wines but I would say there is some coffee, leather and plum along with smooth tannins. Definitely ready to drink now. I wish I had purchased a few more. [84] Read More
