Haut-Medoc

Haut-Medoc is an appellation set up in 1936 [although there has been viticulture here for centuries] for red wines from 15 communes on the eastern side of the Medoc peninsular stretching nearly 40 miles north of the City of Bordeaux. Vine cultivation here really got going in the 17th century when Dutch engineers drained the salt marshes The appellation includes the prestigious communes of Margaux, Pauillac, St-Estephe, and St-Julien, as well as Listrac and Moulis. It includes four of the five First Growths, as well other extremely prestigious estates. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the greatest proportion of most of the wines.

  • There is a lot of information on this vintage available at the usual download locations - particularly if you have accounts (I avoid this in most cases as I hate advertising).  Having said this, i can say that I have not had a poor example from this Bordeaux vintage - which is either merely serendipitous or an excellent indicator of the quality ... • I can imagine the hidden powers of that Alexander Valley wine.  Nice country up there, and when I went through there last (a while back, I concede) the wines seemed to have more finesse and elegance (those based on Cabernet Sauvignon, at any rate) than all but the best from the relatively close-by Napa-Sonoma region.  There is a certain purity a... • Chateau Larrivaux 2016

    Snoothrank:

This amazing 2016 Bordeaux vintage just keeps rolling along! The 2016 Larrivaux is pure Haut-Medoc; the scent of this wine is wonderful, with blackberry and cassis dominating. A pure wine with entry of tannic blackberry, this product is ready for drinking although it may last up to 5 years in the bottle. Buttery smooth. A fantastic buy. 91. Read More

  • Well, DV, the Bordeaux Release is the largest ever, I think, with something like 241 product listings.  However, the advertisement was pretty much strictly on their internet site and at various locations set to offer the wines for sale.  To me, the whole operation is amateurish and stuck on the idea of first come, first served line-ups on the ea... Snoothrank:

Here is another fine unclassified growth from the Haut-Medoc... garnet red in presentation, with an enticing and "correct" claret nose of cassis, cedar plank, and blackberry with a hint of pencil lead. • Chateau Senejac 2010

    Snoothrank:

The 2010 Senejac has matured nicely since it last passed my lips, and tastes like a 5th Growth rather than its Cru Bourgeois provenance in Haut-Medoc (there is only one classified growth in this region). Anyway, this wine has some tannic punch to last another 3-5 years, but seems mature now; lots of blackberry (Cabernet influence), grainy cherr... Read More
