Quite apple and mineral driven on the nose with some chalky soil tones topped with polleny floral notes and a touch of butcher’s wax. Noticeably sweet on entry but with tons of acidity lending this a vivid sweet/tart impression on the palate. The fruit is ripe with hints of peach and even something tropical and banana like framing the core of apple fruit. There’s a lovely hint of bitterness on the finish, along with more banana fruit and green apple , but the bitterness really keeps things interesting when juxtaposed against the sweet/tart palate impression. Kind of fun in a serious and decidedly food friendly way. 88pts

  • 729598Saffredi Dear Pinot Gris - , Pinot Grigio - , Grauburgunder afficionados, When at its very best this is certainly one of my favourite wines! Though some Alsacian producers make very good P.G., the best P.G.'s still come from North and Northeast Italy: Alto Adige and Friuli. Yes, Italy. We should quickley disregard any P.G. from Veneto (don't know why it sells so good in the US; must be the low price). But in Alto Adige I just recently tasted the top level P.G.'s from Tiefenbrunner Castel Turmhof (2011 and 2012) and in Friuli Isonzo the 2009, 2010 and 2011 P.G. Dessimis from Vie di Romans. Not just excellent, but truly outstanding (in my point of view). If you are used to drinking regular P.G.'s from the States or Veneto, Italy, a new world will be opening up for you when drinking the P.G.'s I just tasted. WOW !
