Special Occasion Wines Worth The Price

The holidays are quickly approaching. It is a great time of year to spend time with those we love while enjoying great food and wine. Furthermore, there is no better time than now to open that special bottle of wine you have been saving all year. I recently returned from Tuscany where I toured and tasted my way through a wonderful winery in Montepulciano called Avignonesi. Avignonesi crafts many outstanding wines including Rosso di Montepulciano, elegant Vino Nobile de Montepulcianos and bold Toscana IGTs, but the wine that is truly an out of body experience is their coveted Vin Santo, “a mystery wrapped in patience.” While there I had the pleasure of viewing the “appassitoio” where the grapes are dried on straw mats for 6 months and the “caterelli” cocoons, where the magic of the indigenous yeast “madre” slowly mixes with the grapes for 10 years, morphing into decadent, golden goodness. Avignonesi’s Vin Santos are available in 100% Sangiovese and a blend of Trebbiano and Malvasia Toscano; it is hard to pick which one is better because they are both outstanding and will serve you well as a holiday splurge; however, the Occhio di Pernice is truly the lap of luxury! Avignonesi’s Vino Santos pairs beautifully with a light dessert after a large holiday meal or just to sip and enjoy. If pairing consider savory herbal cheese, goat cheese, citrus, a dry hazelnut biscotti, dried fig gelato, bitter dark chocolate or as a “syrup” topper for ice cream. Occhio di Pernice Vin Santo di Montepulciano DOC 2000 pours a decadent dried fig into the glass while aromas and flavors of fruit cake, anise, molasses, hazelnut and a touch of orange zest taking center stage; alluring viscosity and mouth coating decadence fill the palate in a well-structured delight; truly a wine to savor. This is a very highly rated wines and a perfect holiday splurge to share with friends and family. It is available in the US in a 375ml bottle and retails for $280. A small pour is all you need so each bottle goes a long way and will last for many weeks upon opening; for full enjoyment use brandy snifters. This is a true special occasion wine; with your first sip you will not only understand it is well worth the price but I am certain you will include it as part of your holiday tradition. Cheers!
