Special Occasion Wines Worth The Price

As the days get shorter here in New York City and the brisk fall wind brings in cooler weather it gets me in the mood for a more concentrated red wine – while staying elegant and expressing a sense of place. And so I turn to the Douro in Portugal, and not for a sweet fortified wine, but for a dry red wine with only 13.5% abv. My special occasion wine is the 2011 Niepoort Redoma Douro Tinto. The great man behind this wine is Dirk Niepoort, the first to prove to the world that Portugal could make great unfortified wines. The 2011 is actually one of my favorite in recent history of the Redoma vintage since there is a bright acidity that gives this intense wine a refreshing finish. This is a savory wine that expresses more intense minerality than fruit and is carried by a great energy from the structured tannins. Drinking great now, after a few hours of decanting, and can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years. This iconic wine punches above its weight retailing around $39 and will certainly bring the “wow” factor to any special occasion.
