Girl Power! Feminine Focus on 2015 Argentine Wine Awards

Earlier this month, Wines of Argentina announced theme, dates and details of the 2015 Argentina Wine Awards. The theme of the awards ceremony will be, “Women in Wine”, the organization said in a news release.

“The ninth edition of the AWA … will emphasis women's empowerment and the role played by women in the industry,” Wines of Argentina said. “The purpose of this issue is to find out what the leading women in wine think about Argentine wines.”

The event will take place February 8 to February 13 in the Mendoza province. Wines of Argentina and Wine Corporation Argentina are organizing the event.

The event's female focus will center on the competition's international and national juries, which will be made up of women, according to the release.

The jury will be headed by several well known wine international wine experts, including Masters of Wine Jancis Robinson (United Kingdom), Christy Canterbury (United States), Barbara Philip (Canada), Annete Scarfe (Singapore/Hong Kong) and Essi Avellan (Finland).
An all-women jury, the release said, will represent the growing presence of women in all aspects of the winemaking process.

“Today, women hold positions in all stages of the production of wine, such as winemakers, export managers consumers and especially sommeliers, where the feminine sense of smell experiences aromas with more intensity and finds  the names which identify them more naturally,” Wines of Argentina said.

A recent study by a Brazilian researcher revealed that women have, on average 43% more cells than men in their olfactory bulbs, the mechanisms by which humans smell, a recent article by the UK's Daily Mail reported.

“These feminine skills combined on a jury that features the most important figures in the world of wine will surely make the AWA 2015 an unforgettable experience,” the release said.

Wines will be judged by type, variety and price, the release said. A special trophy will be given to a winery in each region to encourage participation of wineries from all of Argentina's wine regions, including Northern Argentina, Cuyo and Patagonia, the release said.

The event will take place in at two different hotels in Mendoza. The event will begin with opening cocktails on February 8. Tastings will be conducted from February 9  to February 12. The awards ceremony will take place on February 13 at Trivento Winery.
